Black Screen. Is it DEAD?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 that was working perfectly until I connected a VGA cable from laptop to a flat screen TV. This caused the display panel to go black and unable to boot beyond the windows symbol. Yet all internal diagnostics and Bios indicate that video test passes. External monitor will not display any more than laptop LCD panel. I have been told that if video card on a laptop fails it can not be repaired with out replacing the mother board. Should I try any other tests before I junk this system? Thanks for any help with this matter.

Hi,

I would try the following. Disconnect the external screen from the laptop and boot it up. The computer could be set to display only to external monitor. This will show windows loading when if first starts but when it his the logon screen it will go blank (if you have a logon screen) some drivers dont project the logon screen so it could be there you just can see it. You could using the fn key and f4 (normally) to toggle through to laptop only that might work or you could try unplugging the monitor once its booted up this should make it revert back to using the laptop screen. If not try booting it up without the external plugged in. You could also try pressing f8 on boot up to get into windows safe mode and make sure its back to projecting to the laptop.
