Booting problem with Vostro

I have a two-year old Vostro laptop.  It was hardly used.  When our children come home during holidays, they use the laptop for emailing.  That's all.  So far, the Vostro works just fine.  I keep it as a backup for my desktop in case something goes wrong on the desktop.  Today, I tried to boot under safe mode to delete a hard to delete file.  When I hit F8 key, it seems working butit  stopped.  The bottom of the line I see on the screen  is:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System32\Drivers\Map.sys. 

 How can I fix this problem?  hummer
