Brightness and volume visual indicators dont work

When I brighten/dim my screen or adjust the volume on my e1705, the bars that show the brightness/ volume level that are supposed to show up on the screen do not show up.  The screen brightens and the volume changes, but there is no visual indicator.  If anyone can tell me how to fix this I would greatly appreciate it.
