Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop dead?

I bought an AC adapter.   Plugged it in to laptop.  Adapter light is a steady green once I plug it in to power source.  When I plug adapter into laptop, Adapter light still green but rapidly flashing.  Still can not start up laptop.  Sadly, laptop no longer under Dell warranty.

Help!
