Dell Inspiron 3531 DDR3 or DDR3L ?
HI everyone,
i'm new to the community and i have a question.
i've bought the Dell Inspiron 3531 and i saw that from dell store it comes with 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ram and Celeron N2830.
On intel site the N2830 requires only DDR3L Ram that runs at a lower voltage, 1.35V instead of 1.5V like DDR3.

Intel support told me that is not good to use DDR3 at 1.5V on the SoC N2830.
Now, i would like to know if the DDR3 shipped with my notebook are DDR3 at 1.35V or classic DDR3 at 1.5V. I called the Italian support where i live and them didn't know it. If i search on the DELL store for a ram upgrade to the inspiron 3531 it gives me DDR3L and not DDR3.
Sorry for my little confusion, but i don't want to use my notebook with a non correct hardware.

But i called the dell store and they told me that is DDR3 at 1.5V and for them it's the same, no difference... So i disappointed with this. Now i will use the manual to show them that is necessary DDR3L and i will ask for them.
On Dell store site if you see, the inspiron 3531 has DDR3 as specific and i don't know why or if it means DDR3 @ 1.35V

It ships with and supports only DDR3L.

It isn't uncommon for a manufacturer to offer bad advice on upgrade parts -- Dell's not alone there.
Just about all current notebooks use DDR3L only - the Haswell CPUs require it (as do the Atom CPUs in the budget models like the 3531).

Well this is not true...
With 64bit system you can put up to 8GB of ram and a friend of mine did it, he has inspiron 3531 running at 8GB of ram
and you can use DDR3 on DDR3L but the pc will use more energy and will overheat. So you can ship it with DDR3 but is not a good configuration for the entire machine.

The system will not boot with 1.5V RAM - it will simply issue a 2-beep code and halt the boot process.
Though 8G may have worked for your friend - there are no guarantees, as 4G is the RAM max for this machine (both per Dell and Crucial).

The system won't even boot with DDR3 installed, so it in fact cannot ship with that type of memory.
There's only one memory socket on this model and with max RAM at 4G, it cannot be upgraded anyway.
It's essentially an appliance - the only upgradeable part in it is the hard drive.

I don't think Dell offers bad services but just there is some confusion between manual, online site etc etc.
I will contact italian support on monday to have the confirmation that is DDR3L and if them replay that they will ship with DDR3 i will send the PC back and take my money. The US DELL support confirmed my that the inspiron 3531 NEEDS DDR3L and not DDR3

The system will ship with one, 4G DDR3L soDIMM. That's what the system supports.
What you do with it after that is up to you - but realize there is no support for 8G, so it if doesn't work, you have no recourse. In all honesty, this is a very low-end system with a very low-end CPU -- the added 4G just won't amount to much.

You're not paying attention to the fact that THE SYSTEM WILL NOT BOOT with 1.5V RAM. It REQUIRES 1.35V DDR3L memory.
It WILL NOT arrive from Dell with 1.5V RAM.

i Hope It, but i'm pretty sure that you can use DDR3 on DDR3L.

Yes but Intel told me that it can support 8GB and that can run also DDR3 at 1.5V causing instability of the system and overheating. I think Intel knows everything about the N2830. About the maximum ram i don't know where you find the limit on the dell site, but yes i read on web that is max 4GB. If you search for some review you will see that a lot of people are putting 8GB of Ram

Yes i know and i was looking for some technical information about the ram. I will never update the ram to 8GB and i will leave it with 4 but only if them are DDR3L.
If i have to change them cause DDR3 are wrong i think i will be able to put 8GB cause DELL send me the wrong one, and 8GB DDR3L are even better than 4GB DDR3.
