Dell Precision M4600 brightness controll failure after intel chipset inf upgrade

As said in subject, after upgraiding intel chipset inf to 9.2.0.1030 (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility) I'm unable to change brightness level in Win7 x64. It works fine in BIOS and just before windows desktop loads.

Like in other similar subject disabling nVidia Optiumus helps, but it's not good solution due to battery drain.

It seems to be some software problem, but it's impossible to uninstall intel inf and reinstalling DEFP doesn't help.

Please don't ask me to reinstall Win7 and install driver in proper order. It's not a solution.

This is a known problem and I share your fustrations. You will not be able to change brightness unless you are running the Intel drivers from Dell. You may run the latest Nvidia drivers but for some reason you must run the dell intel display drivers to be able to change the brightness in windows.

I am running  intel chipset inf to 9.2.0.1030 and the latest Intel Display drivers from Dell "Intel Processor Graphics multi-device A09 R307994" Intel version 8.15.10.2418. I tried using the latest display driver version from intel - 8.15.10.2696. I am unable to change brightness.

Dell has a reimage guide for the M4600 and M6600

You must install drivers in this order: (or when updating a driver)

1. Install Intel Chipset Drivers - Reboot

2. Install Intel Display Drivers - Reboot

3. Install Nvidia Display Drivers - Reboot

Re: Dell Precision M4600 brightness controll failure after intel chipset inf upgrade

did you pull your cd rom to get the ssd?

I am thinking of dropping the samsung mini card (want something faster and 256gb instead of 128)

I have a Studio XPS that I pulled the cdrom drive on, works so great.  Put 2 256gb vertex 4s in it :-D

Re: Dell Precision M4600 brightness controll failure after intel chipset inf upgrade

EricSyn:

The OCZ NOCTI is a msata card.

www.amazon.com/.../ref=sr_1_1

I get a WEI of 7.6 with the msata card where I would get a 7.9 with a 2.5" ssd. This is because The msata ports on both the M4600 and M6600 are SATA II 3GB/s. The HDD and Optical drive ports are SATA III 6GB/s.

The OCZ NOCTI rates as one of the faster msata cards and users have reported a noticeable difference between the stock msata card that comes with the system and the OCZ NOCTI ( or any other current msata card ) I upgraded from a 7200 RPM HDD to the msata ssd so there was a huge speed increase. BTW i still have the optical drive & 750GB HDD in the system.

Lol, thanks for making my evening. :-) I had the same problem. The light bulb came on when I was able to change the brightness after i uninstalled the Intel drivers, yes the brightness control works with no intel drivers installed. Anyway after a lot of cursing and frustration, I decided to install the dell intel drivers and all was well.

The precision laptops have some quirks, but i love the look and power packed into these laptops. It will be interesting to see if Dell sticks with the same case and video cards for the new ivy bridge CPU's. Although from what I have read, the new 3rd generation ivy bridge cpu's are only about 10% faster (and hotter) and the only real advantage is the more powerful built in Intel graphics.
