Is a problem with hdcp the laptop's fault or the receiver? What I mean is that it seems that the laptop just transfers the hdcp encrypted content and does not have anything to do with whether or not the receiving device is authorized to accept it.

Anyway, the jist of the reply, for those interested lurkers, is that the fact it worked with my other name-brand laptop and not with the DELL points the finder at DELL in my book, at least partially, and it couldn't really be the Yamaha HTR-6160 since unlike as PC, I can't software-update that. (But I can sw-update my TV via a USB, nifty stuff.) maybe gonna go try a quick google of Yamaha HTR-6160 and hdcp...
