Inspiron 6000 Monitor blanks out after a few seconds

I have a old inspiron 6000 with a graph card (128) that when I turn on, looks normal, but after about 15 seconds or so the monitor turns off.  The computer seems to be running normally (sounds and PWR / HD LED's). I am assuming that the graph card is bad but would like a second option, Thanks

Attach an external display.  If it goes black as well, the video card could be bad.  If it doesn't, and it likely won't, it's the backlight on the display that's failing, not the video card.

Thanks husky0894, it works fine on the external monitor. Do you (or someone else) know if replacing the backlight is something I can do from home or do I need to send in? (worked on computers for many years but not laptops).

Thanks again and have a great one.

Unless you're skilled with soldering and dismantling very delicate, sensitive parts, leave the job to a pro - you can very easily turn a $100-150 backlight replacement job into a monitor damaged enough to require replacement - which will cost more than twice that.
