Is it necessary to clean residue out from under the touchpad?

Can a small amount of residue under the touchpad of the Inspiron 1525 affect anything other than the working of the touchpad itself? My nephew was using my laptop and accidentally got drool on the touchpad keys (man, I don't even know). Some of it seeped into the seam at the bottom of the keys when I tried to clean it up. It's likely dried by now, having been powered down for 2 days, but obviously that's going to leave some residue.

I really don't want to have to remove the palm rest for cleaning, having never opened up a laptop before! (I'm no longer under warranty, either.)

If it's only the touchpad that won't work properly anymore, that's fine--I have it disabled anyway. What's the likelihood that other components will be affected?

Hi mbell1,

Welcome to the community.

If you have liquid spilled on the touchpad that has seeped under its keys, it may cause the touchpad keys to get sticky. However if the amount of liquid spillage is more and if the liquid  is able to get into the internal components of the computer then it may cause short circuit on the Laptop and may damage critical parts inside the laptop like Motherboard and the Processor.

Please revert back if you need any further assistance. Glad to help you.

It might affect the touchpad effect. You can feel it when you are used to navigating using it. It is normal to have it cleaned from time to time. My suggestion is to always bring a mouse with you.

That's what I was afraid of. It would have been no more than 1/4 teaspoon of liquid, but it sounds like I'd be taking a risk to do nothing.

How difficult would the disassembly be for a beginner?

Hi infofrog,

Thank you for your response,

This is how you can open the touchpad:

It may be complicated to open the touchpad. Thus I’ll suggest to use a dry cloth or tissue paper to clean the water under the keys, if you find it difficult to open the palmrest/touch pad. And turn on the computer after you are sure that the system is dry.

Please revert back if you need any further assistance. Glad to help you.
