Laptop Inspiron 1520 Screen won't light up on battery

I have twoi lithium batteries on my laptop Inspiron 1520, both fully charged.  I inserted one of them and was not able to get a display on the screen.  I tried the other battery - same problem.  I went to Power Options and see nothing there where I can make adjustments to make screen display brighter.
