I've a Studio XPS M1640 and when I run the built in diagnostics I get error 0142. I've replaced the drive and still get the error. The laptop is out of warranty.
I can't get into the BIOS as I don't know the password. I've tried disconnecting the internal battery and leaving it a few days, but the laptop has still retained the password protection.
Can anyone help?
It is possible that the hard drive cable may be at fault or even the motherboard connector. Test these hard drives in a caddy to check if they work.
You may follow the instructions at http://dell.to/2sTXCk3, Section 2 and see if that helps clear the BIOS password.
If all else fails, you may need a replacement motherboard. Check with local or online vendors.
