Using a different moniter with inspiron e1750.

My church is having an congregational art show tomorrow evening.  I have created a folder in my pictures of various photos of various subjects and want to run a slide show.  My inspiron has a 17" moniter.   I have a 22" view sonic monitor for my desk top.  I would like to somehow run my slideshow through my laptop...but by pass the laptop monitor and have the photos displayed on the larger view sonic monitor.  The connection from the view sonic monitor fits in a spot on the back of my inspirion.  THE QUESTION IS: IS THERE A PARTICULAR WAY THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED...BESIDES JUST PLUGGING IN THE OTHER MONITOR CABLE.  IS THERE OTHER BUTTONS TO PUSH???  After the show, I will go back to normal operation of my laptop with the laptop screen working correctly.
