My OS has fallen over and I need to rebuild the laptop. where can I download Windows 8, or even better 8.1 as I got af free upgrade when I bought the laptop.

Easiest is to contact Dell for a recovery flash drive - under warranty, no charge -- out of warranty there's a charge for the media.
