XPS 15 (L502x) with i7-2860QM - 16GB RAM supported?

Any plan on making this work ? (2x8GB 1333 SO-DIMM DDR3) . since what I can read on Intel this HW supports 16GB RAM....

I guess & hope - it's a BIOS patch

what BIOS version do you have? I'm planning on do this upgrade. I have A12.

Also, what tyoe of DDR3 did you use? 1333 MHz? 1666MHZ? latency?

thanks for your help!

best regards!

I ended up getting it to work with with 16gb (2x8GB 1600mhz SO-DIMM DDR3). My BIOS is A12 and I also update my OS to Windows 7 Ultimate (Home Premium should still be fine though). My only advisement would be to note that since this is faster ram than stock (stock is 1333mhz), your system can be expected to run just a little bit warmer on average but nothing drastic. My idle temps went up by about 2 degrees Celsius.

Also, make sure that the latency is either 9-9-9-27 or 11-11-11-28.

Hey, just wanted to check if you had any problems so far after upgrading your ram to 16 Gb. I just ordered 2 x 8 Gb from Corsair, but i am a bit afraid about ruining my motherboard.

Thanks in advance for your response!

I have not taken the time to purchase and install the 16 gbs. I understand your fear, but everything I've read said it wasn't a problem. (of course I haven't taken the time, since my original post, to follow up my research.)

Let me know how it goes for you.

Okay guys - I have a definitive answer here. My hypothesis is that Dell posted the specs about this laptop before the 8GB RAM module came about. The largest single module available at that time was a 4GB chip. The L502X was always capable of handling 16GB, however the most physical RAM you could put in your system (with two RAM slots) was 8GB (4GB x 2). Now that the 8GB module has come around, 16GB (8GB x 2) is obtainable. Dell just hasn't gotten around to updating their specs of this particular system, most likely because a newer XPS 15 has been released.

Would it support 32 GB. Please let me know. Intel says that it supports 32 GB. FYI.. http://ark.intel.com/products/53474/

Technically, yes, if your computer has 4 RAM slots in it. Currently there are no 16GB RAM chips (at least I've never seen/heard of one), so if your computer has only 2 RAM slots, then the max would be 16GB.

Following this thread I guess I can upgrade memory of my XPS L502x with

  • more RAM than officially supported: 16Gb (instead of 8GB, told by Dell support even today)
  • higher speed RAM than original: 1600MHz (instead of 1333)

But does it make difference what voltage I choose

  • Kingston KHX16S9P1K2/16 with 1.5V
  • Kingston KHX16LS9P1K2/16 with 1.35V

Provided that I have latest BIOS (A12).

Best regards, Kristjan Adojaan

Voltage shouldn't matter too much -- only that higher voltages will require more power, thus shorter battery life. I currently have 16 GB of RAM running at 1333 MHz and 1.5 V, so 1.35 should work as well.

What if the memory stick is 1600mhz instead of a 1333mhz? Will it still work?

Yes, it will still work, but it will run at only 1333 MHz, since this is the fastest memory speed supported by the L502X. Your memory stick will work completely normally, but you won't get the full 1600 MHz that it is capable of.

I know this is way late to ask this but, I just got 2X8 gb and it won't see more than 8 gb.  Did you do any bios changes or anything special or just install and run?  I'm struggling.

No, there shouldn't need to be any BIOS configuration. Are you sure you are on the L502X, and not another XPS 15 model?

It is easy to miss seat one of the chips.  Take them out and try again, and again.

Possibly one of the chips is bad.   Test each chip one by one separately in the PC.

Good luck.
