XPS 15 L521x restore system using backup discs

Hello Greetings from Peru. I am new to this forum so please feel free to relocate this post if it's misplaced. As I am not a computing expert and as I could not find an answer to my problem I am posting my situation here hoping someone can help me solve it. It will be greatly appreciated. I have got a XPS L521X with a 750 GB HDD + 32GB SSD. It came originally with win7 and recently I updated it to win 8 via the simple win 8 update procedure. It starts as it came, with bios. Recently win 8 crashed helplessly and it won't start even trying to start it in safe mode. When It tries to starts only loads a blue screen suggesting to use the recovery disk to fix the problem. I booted the recovery disk and tried to do an that, but the recovery program cannot find the drive C: where the SO is installed to start recovering windows :( (cannot find any hard drive at all, the HDD nor the SSD). I suppose it is related to the Intel SRT and the dual disk the machine comes with. 1 I would like to know how to use the recovery disk having a setup like the mentioned above. I Tried the simple way mentioned in the Owners manual but if it does not detect a SO installed or a disk the recovery cannot continue. 2 If recovering win 8 is not possible, how do I re install the image disks of win 7 I created before the upgrade? I tried to recover the image by first booting the win7 installation disk that came with the laptop and then inserting the image disk as required but it shows an error. Also tried to recover win 7 from scratch to then recover the image but it cannot find the drive to install too. Any help with this will be very welcome. Thank you in advance for your help. Oswald

Hello.

After trying without luck different solutions and without receiving help from Dell, I finally managed to solve the problem with hints some friends and forums gave me.

To make the repair disk discover the hard disk (because my XPS 15 has 2 drives in RAID mode and were not discoverable by the installation program), I had to load Intel RST drivers downloaded from Dell support page during recovery process.

After Loading the right drivers and the Drive was found, it was easy to simply load image DVDs as prompted by the recovery program.

Hi Oswald.

Can you tell me which driver you downloaded, and if possible, post a link? We have the same problem here!

Many thanks

Liam

Hello Liam

I posted the solution I found in the following thread. You will also find a solution from user JMC - Mpls in the same thread (post Feb 2013).

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4677/p/19484975/20268536.aspx#20268536

Just an update. After recovering win 7, I ordered an 128 GB msata drive (Crucial) and replaced the old 32GB one. Now I have 2 hard drives, Disc  "C:" system drive with 128 GB, now with Win 8; and a second "D:" data drive (old spinning HDD 750GB). They are not any more in RAID.

Hope you find a solution here. It really bothered big time.

Greetings
