inspiron 8200 line in not recognized with crystal driver

i have windows xp on this laptop and when i install the crystal audio driver i loose the use of the line in since its not showing up in the recording properties and it doesn't have a volume slider in the mixer. audacity doesn't even see it as a an input it can use. the only recording inputs i can use are that of whats on a latitude series computer mic in and stereo mix. what can i do to fix this issue. is there a better driver for this laptop or what is the case. originally xp called the sound card an intel sound card.
