new XPS 17 "L702X" + 1080p 3D TFT = no Optimus?

Hello,

I can read everywhere, if I order the new XPS 17 with FullHD 3D TFT,

then I can´t use Optimus because the GT 555M have to run the whole time (?)

Can anyone confirm this curious "feature"? Will a FullHD-only TFT (without 3D)

also be available in the next time?

Thanxx,

AX

By the way, some of those I mentioned over on notebookreview are looking into Sager and Asus, as am I.

Yes, Dell, please fix this insane limitation immediately.  I want to buy two of these machines, but not without FHD, WiDi and Optimus.  Either enable Optimus and WiDi on the current 3D panel or provide an option for a non-3D FHD panel with these two important features enabled.  I'll be waiting with my money in hand for you to respond as will the tons of others that have posted similar things over on notebookreview.

Massive BUMP on this post.

This is not hard Dell, figure it out. I want THIS variant of the l702x:

- 1920x1080
- GT 555m
- Optimus
- i7

All in one laptop. I don't care about 3D its not needed nor wanted.

I truely want to buy this laptop but this variant needs to exist.

Same thoughts here.

I was ready to order this beautifull new machine with the 3D FHD screen until the WiDi/Optimus issue came about....

It simply doesn't make sense to buy the more expensive 3D FHD screen option and then do without WiDi/Optimus that the cheaper non-FHD version DOES support.

As soon as DELL provides an viable alternative screen, meaning  the 3D FHD screen (so that I can also use the 3D option) OR simply a regular FHD or better resolution (WUXGA 1920x1200 anyone?) , I'll definitely stay in the DELL camp.

For now, I'll keep my money on the bank and will wait and see if this get's picked up up by DELL.....

I'm hoping Dell comes out with a non 3D, 1080p 17 inch laptop.  I'm not sure why they don't offer that option.  I would have bought the l701x if they would have offered a 1080p option.  I don't need a laptop until the middle of May.   Hopefully, Dell gives us that new option in the near future, otherwise I'll get an ASUS laptop with 1080p instead.

Some good news.  Dell is offering a 1080p screen that's non 3D in Australia.  Hopefully, they'll be offering the same in the USA soon.

[Been researching this extensively... cross-posted from here]

I've read of a few on here who ordered the 900p XPS 17 (non-3D with 3GB 555M graphics) did, in fact, receive all 4 functional DIMM slots. Could I ask one of you (or someone with the brand new non-3D 1080p displays) to confirm this and post the part numbers (available from email order link or online). Include the base system ("XPS 17"), processor, graphics, and display if not your order number and full specs (like below). Also let us know which country you are in as that will likely affect the components. This should help the rest of us order a system with these exact components.

Also, if willing, could you verify that your system correctly recognizes the great new Sandy Bridge features...
1) Optimus switchable graphics - should look like this article
2) Intel Quick Sync encoding - see lower right corner of MediaConverter 7 interface (download)
3) Intel Wireless Display - if able to install the WiDi Connection Manager seen here (download) <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
4) Intel Insider 1080p streaming - not yet available, but can be assumed

For other's reference, I can confirm that the XPS 17 3D (below) features 4 DIMM slots but none of the Sandy Bridge enhancements listed above. I've tested with the latest drivers from Dell's website as well as the slightly newer drivers from Intel and Nvidia (a beta). I'm still struggling with Dell's Escalations Team and Tech Managers to confirm that this isn't simply that the full drivers are not yet ready. If its hardware, I've arranged to replace this with a non-3D, 1080p version in order to get better battery life (~33% longer) and faster encoding (i5 was 48% faster than NVIDIA’s high-end GeForce GTX 460). Aside from missing these new features (some of which were advertised), it's a great machine but these are deal-breakers for me. If need be, I'll replace the display with a 1080p WLED myself later.

Update 4/3/11...
I'm still searching high and low for part numbers to help us determine precisely which non-3D components include 4 DIMM slots and use the Intel GPU via Optimus. Though I have yet to hear back from anyone here, some creative Googling has turned up a couple listing their non-3D components. Unfortunately for me, the first forum is in Chinese and they just placed the order so we can't readily tell if they found 2 or 4 DIMMs, etc. Still, given its the only reference I've seen for comparison, I figured I'd share them on notebookreview.

Still looking... Any other non-3D part-numbers with more insight?

Having just purchased a non 3D 1080p in Australia I feel been feeling a 'little privileged' after reading so many posts on these issues around the planet.. I must say I have been concerned over the configuration and decided that optimus was more important than 3D being concerned about heating..the gt555m is supposed to be a power glutton and is running hot which I find a little bit daunting..I am a little dissapointed that only 2 dimms are available on this model and apparently 1600mhz wont run on 2720 cpus with a BIOS restricting it to 1333mhz..probably wont make much difference and 8 gig is acceptable at the moment...it is has been challenging configuring this cutting edge technology I have this fear that in 6 months I will regret not waiting a little longer but at the moment this is by far the best machine on the market in this price range and I am really looking forward to receiving it

Hi Camo1235.  Is the screen you ordered Anti Glare or Glossy?  Dell is only selling glossy screens on the XPS 17 models in the USA.  I hope they offer a matte option for this model.  I'll buy one if they do.  Let us know how you like the screen when you get it.  Thanks.

It is Anti Glare surprisngly the upgrade was only 80$ ..even more surprising that this has happened only in australia and we got it first i am so used to seeing these types of things happening overseas or in the US..I feel a bit guilty mentioning on these forums as many people are quite annoyed that the non 3D 1080p option hasnt been offered..but I am also very relieved as with these types a fast graphic systems heating becomes a real issue and with the 3D not having the optimus option I see a real risk to the systems sold like this..I have been told by dell consultant that they shared the same concerns about the heating..I would like 3D but not at the expense of losing this more effecient system..I have spent the extra on the 2720QM as it is getting very good reviews and will help the optimus run smoothly...the downside to this non 3D is I only get 2 dimms unfortunately... though I feel 8 gig should b ok for a while... I have heard that the AG is very good and better  than glossy  for non 3D situations..I will let you know when it arrives in hopefully 3 weeks..sorry to all those people overseas who have not had this 1080p non 3d AG option If feel a bit guilty talking about it..more shocked that only we got too!!  Hopefully it wont be long till you all have the same choice..I couldnt see another system at the moment close to it this for this price range.. they are superb computers

I dont blame you for being annoyed I am really surprsied that australia got this non3D 1080p option we are usually the last to get anything like this and that the option hasnt been offered to these massive markets.

I get the impression that there are technical problems with the 3D model a Dell person told me they had problems getting the alienware going with 3D and there were concerns with the 3D model having heating issues.  I would have liked 3D but not at the expense of no optimus and my system does have WiDi support it shows it in the oder form.. These systems are Xtreme Performace Systems XPS they are not value machines but high end. There isnt alot of options at the moment and sandy bridge has been slow to come through, this is by far the best option at the moment but if I was in your boat and not able to get optimus and non3D 1080p I would be very annoyed to.

I read a suggestion somewhere that Nvidia is trying to get rid of these 3D systems and has done some type of deal with  Dell to do this. I dont know if this is true or not but I am shocked that they would mess with such a massive market by not giving people this option and forcing people to get a system that does not have the sandy bridge options.  This may be ok for many consumers who are not a tech orientated but too many people are tech aware and switched on, we are aware consumers.

My beef is that coz I am getting a non 3D version I only get 2 dimms..I am a bit confused and dismayed by this, this is no reliable information on what a 2720qm will take in teerms of memory intel says it will support 8 gig but they are being sold with up to 16 gig and no ones really seems to know what is goig on.. Oh welll it is very new technology and I guess I shouldnt whinge coz at least I got the non 3D  1080p option.

Good luck with it guys hopefully they will come through soon.  Like I said I am amazed that they would mess with such a big market I had a look at the american site and I realised how lucky we were in australia, for a change.  One thing is if you are considering HP watch out for the heating they are getting blasted by there owners in forums, and ASUS are slow out of the blocks with sandy bridge. I would not touch Apple with a barge pole they are ridiculously priced as well as ridiculous systems I cant stand their OS it is for kids or home users

I have been posting about this as well (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19369155/19839280.aspx#19839280) so just wanted to add my voice to the clamour here in the hope that the more pressure we put on Dell the more likely they are do something reasonable about it.

In my thread one respondent said that the reason WiDi was not included in the 3D model because it was not high end. This does not make sense to me, its like Bugatti not providing windscreen wipers because they are a non-luxury item that all cars have!

So yeah I 100% agree with the other posters here, please can we have a non-3D 1080p version of this laptop that simply has all the cutting edge Sandy Bridge enhancements enabled rather than turned off?

As someone else mentioned, there just does not seem to be a modern replacement for the E1705 model  I bought a few years ago on the market from any one right now (in the UK anyway) so this is a major gap in the market. Sony's E series has everything but powerful graphics, Asus G73 is fine apart from the fact its laughably massive and thus no good for those who need to appear 'professional' in a business setting, Apples 17" MBP is so stupidly priced its not funny and HP's Sandy Bridge Envy 17 is STILL not available in the UK!

So come on Dell you are 98% there and you have the components (in Australia), so please step up and fill this gaping hole in the market. As any Apple MBP 17" user will tell you, not everyone who needs a power laptop is a gamer (primarily), so please can someone out there service our requirements!

April 13th, 2011 06:00

My beef is that coz I am getting a non 3D version I only get 2 dimms..I am a bit confused and dismayed by this

Yeah that seems utterly bonkers aswell...why disable hardware that is already physically there?! I just cannot fathom what Dell is doing right now, they just seem to be being a pain and disabling all sorts of functions and hardware just for the sake of it. I am sure thats not the case and that there are technical reasons, but then why do technical reasons exist in some territories and not others, something to do with voltage maybe...

Glad to hear you would not touch Apple with a barge pole, if only there were more like you, it might prompt Apple to get down off their high horse and come back down to earth with their pricing, so that real normal users can buy their products rather than just poseurs and fashionistas who think having an Apple product makes them superior to everyone else (which they are obviously because they can afford to pay twice as much as us mere mortals for the same tech)...

Oh well, just keep twiddling my thumbs waiting for someone to come up with something that ticks all the boxes, I have been waiting 12 months so far, a couple more won't hurt (not)...

You probably are better waiting a little bit this is very new technology like you I been waiting for quite some time aware that sandy bridge offered performance that is essential for some of my requirements.. I have heard that are issues implementing 3D in some modesl apparently alienware had some problems, but to me it is gimick compared to having the advantages that the optimus system works. To me this has becomes essential with fast graphics cars generating heat such as the gt555m.

I get the feeling that this new technolgy will take a little time to settle in and i get sickening feeling that in 6 months I may regret going now but these are awesome systems alot of the boxes are being ticked.  I get the feeling that Nvidia are trying to push their 3D systems and have done some deal with Dell to encourage the market.  There are probably alot of technical reasons to, overall i have said right get the system for 2000$ I am gettting 2720qm gt555qm 3 gig optimus WiDi 1080p Anti Glare monitor, 1.2 terrabyte 7200 rpm HDD, these are serious specs for this price that cpu is out peforming an i7 870 920 975 desktop cpus it is enough to purchase ..8 gig of ram is adequte for now I musnt get to caught up in specs but these are awesome computers they are beautiful to use to the touchpad is the best I have ever used the looks are superb and it has a very nice keyborad that is backilit..it is by far the best on the market at the moment in this price range.

Any one who is into apple is really saying that they are ignorant when it comes to technology it is as you say a fashion accessory that allows no control over the system..it is designed for dummies and its spec are ridiculous..apple has always had this arrogance..thats why I stopped using them over 15 years ago.

Good luck getting a system I have a feeling it is probably a good thing to let things settle I am nervous getting this cutting edge stuff but look at the specs before this thing is a monster

You are lucky Camo1235.  Dell doesn't offer the anti glare(matte) screen here in the USA.  I wish they would.  I hate the glare from the glossy screens. Maybe you can post a video on youtube and do a review when you get your new laptop.  I'd really like to know how you like the anti glare, 1080p screen.  Maybe Dell will offer that option to us in the USA in the future .  They currently only offer the glossy 1080p screen. It's strange that they wouldn't offer a matte screen as an option, since online reviews have been putting that down as one of the few negatives on the systems. I guess the reviewers don't like glossy screens either.
