new XPS 17 "L702X" + 1080p 3D TFT = no Optimus?

Hello,

I can read everywhere, if I order the new XPS 17 with FullHD 3D TFT,

then I can´t use Optimus because the GT 555M have to run the whole time (?)

Can anyone confirm this curious "feature"? Will a FullHD-only TFT (without 3D)

also be available in the next time?

Thanxx,

AX

hey spudzz the easiest way to check for WiDi would be to go under the start menu in all programs there is one called 'intel corporation' the wireless display is in there and the easiest way to check optimus is to right click the desktop and context menu will have 'nvidia control panel' if you open that you will see a 'manage 3D settings' section if you click that you will see a couple of parts that control the 'global settings' or the 'program settings' this where you can configure the optimus preferences under the 'preferred graphics processor'..also check that the monitor does go to 1920 x 1080..good luck I have poked around a bit took me a little while to find every thing..also recommend thermal cooling pad

Have just received my PC and just had a look at the screen and can confirm the screen is a non 3D 1080p screen.

easiest way right click desktop in the middle of the context menu check nvidia control panel in the manage 3D settings there is global and program settings you can choose preferred graphics processor that is one example of optimus either intel or nvidia gpu can be selected..,it should be there if you have optimus

This has taken a while to get to the UK, I have been following this thread as it has been epic and had more twists and turns than a soap opera!! I would be interested to know if the Sandy Bridge features are active on these systems, there are no indicators at this stage that Optimus is present as was the case in other countries,

it would be good to know when your system arrives if WiDi and Optimus are there. Probably one easy way to check for Optimus is if you have 2 GPUs the Intel and Nvidia they will show in device manager or use the Nvidia control panel where Optimus can be configured, Optimus is a very good system and seamless on mine you wouldnt even know the GPUs were changing.  Good luck with it they are great laptops.

Hey all,

I'm from the UK and recently placed an order for the 1080p FHD non 3D screen on the xps 17, even tho it's not advertised on the website. Mine's due this Monday hopefully, so does sounds like it'll come with the right screen from the recent posts. Power Cord : UK 250V

The UK have been waiting for months what other countries have had for quite some times it does seem very strange and it is only more tenacious customers that are getting this.  I was fortunate enough to get the first one like this when it came out so have followed the thread. The system i have received is terrific they are very well made computer and at this price range I found it to be the best buy at the time after much research, prior to the L720X I had always got ASUS laptops but these ticked alot of boxes.

Apparently the XPS series have taken alot of technology from Dells acquisition of Alienware and the new Sandy Bridge CPUs are very impressive.  I would have liked 3D but I really wanted Optimus more particularly with these new powerful GPUs using alot of energy and causing heat, apparently the 3D system requires a dedicated GPU.

Assuming yours comes through the same as mine I imagine that you will be happy.

Yeah I think I've come on the tail end of this one ! I had no idea what some people had been going through after reading some of the forums. I actually made a recent purchase on the Dell UK outlet , for an L502x. High spec one with all the trimmings for a good price. However it turned out to be a bit of a lemon , so in the process of returning it. This range however fits exactly what I need, and was impressed with the build quality and performance of the 15. So I stumped for the L702x for the larger screen as the 1080p is just a little too small on a 15" ! (and bought new this time), which it what got me looking into the issue with the 3d and non-3d screens, issues surrounding optimus etc!

So I'm quite looking forward to seeing what actually turns up, and what works and doesn't on it - if it's not up to my expectations for the features I am hoping for matched wth this screen , I'll just have to give the current range a miss :(

I'll defo check and report back !

To be fair to Dell (reluctantly) they are not the only ones treating the UK this way. The HP Envy 17 has been available with Sandy Bridge for about 3 months in other parts of the world but is yet to arrive here. The Acer Ethos 8951G while it was announced in the UK first is actually shipping about a month sooner in the US, the MSI GT780 is yet to arrive etc etc. Currently the only option in the UK for full HD Sandy Bridge with gamer graphics (i.e. min nvidia 555) from a major manufacturer is the Asus G73, but you'd look a total muppet taking that into a business meeting, since it is a) huge and b) designed for teenage gamers with rich parents. The situation is ludicrous. If it were just Dell I'd boycot them for life, but unfortunately everyone else is playing the same annoying game...

@Spudzz so you have to return the system to get the voucher discount, I dont blame you if that 25% voucher came up just after buying a system I would do the same, I saw vouchers like this but none of them worked, I work at a uni which gets me 10% off but I couldnt get any any good vouchers to work.

You are right the HD monitor is very sharp and good image and the viewing from angles are the best I have ever seen it really grows on you that monitor.

25% off is a bonus

Will be returning my system to Dell, and have already reordered my new system with the 25% off voucher the difference in price was to much to justify keeping the system I received this week.

Had a look at the 1080p screen before I boxed it up and I can tell you now that is a hell of a lot better then the Std 900 screen.

Viewing angles are very good, also very nice colors and a nice matt finish.
