Laptop not reading my Seagate external hard drive

Hi!

I just purchased a DELL Inspiron and my external hard drive (Seagate Expansion) is not reading.  I know the hard drive works and the USB ports on the laptop work as well.  Any help you can give me would be great - DELL is really not being helpful and I am kind of desperate to get my files off!
