Latitude 7490: where does one fit an M.2 NVME 2230 SSD (2xlanes)

Hi, I have just taken possession of a brand new Latitude 7490 fitted with a M.2 2280 SATA SSD (Key M+B). I am interested by an additional SSD, especially a PCIe/NVME model.

Dell's Technical Guidebook lists several M.2 2280 PCIe models (4 x lanes) and 1 x M.2 2230 PCIe model (2 x lanes), the latter at top of p26: https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/latitude-12-7290-laptop_reference-guide3_en-us.pdf

Obviously, all M.2 2280 4 x lanes SSD models fit in the M.2 slot with Key M (should be PCIe x4) but I was wondering about the M.2 2230 2 x lanes model. To me, this would have fitted in the WWAN M.2 slot with Key B (can only be PCIe x2).

However, a question re: SSD in the WWAN slot was made on the forum in Aug 2018 -granted it was for a SATA SSD- and a rather categoric answer given: https://www.dell.com/community/Latitude/Latitude-7490-SSD-in-WWAN/m-p/6133972#M6055

I remain confused on the matter because I really don't see how an M.2 2230 could possibly be fitted in the main Key M slot when there is no possibility to physically secure it in place. On the other hand, I would have expected it to fit in the WWAN slot, although I get the feeling that the slot actually supports a 2242 or 3042 card, not a 2230.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Many thanks,

Hervé

Maybe this will help: https://www.dell.com/community/Latitude/Latitude-7285-SSD-form-facto/td-p/6071902 I few post in they list Dell Part numbers for 2230 NVME drives. It seems that the drives also have a “hestsink” like shell that screws the drive down in place, leading me to believe the shell is slightly larger and that is why it appears a 2242 NVME drive may work. Someone stated they have a 2242 drive working in their 7285 and the tight space and pressure from the computer closed keeps the drive in place. I’m looking to buy a 7285 and acquire dual Toshiba RC100 drives. But it still a work in progress. Hope this helps.

I went ahead and bought one of those Toshiba RC100 a few days ago. Will see when it gets delivered...

Got the Toshiba RC100 today. It's not detected when fitted to the WWAN slot, so that B Key 2242 slot clearly has limitations. RC100 only works when fitted to the M Key 2280 slot but then it can not be secured in place... I'll keep it for future use.

Hi RV_ABZ,

Are there any updates for this? Did you try to change setting in BIOS, with:

- Drive

- Wireless device enable

Today I have asked Dell support team and what they replied is:
"there is no secondary port available in order to upgrade the second SSD"

No, there's no update and things are not expected to change. No SSD support in the WWAN Key-B slot whether it'd be a SATA or an NVME model.

Tested with:

  1. Toshiba RC100 240GB, NVME (PCIe Gen 3 x2), M.2 2242, Key M+B
  2. Transcend TS240GMTS420S 240GB, SATA 6Gb/s, M.2 2242, Key M+B

-> No success

Same here - tested with SK Hynix 128 GB HFM128GDHTNG. Doesn't work win WWAN slot either. I took a chance and tried ALL bios version available. Couple of hours wasted I've seen this guy on youtube doing this with 5401 model and you'd think this would work across all latitudes. But I guess for some reason they disabled it on 7490. Pity.
