Is there going to be XPS 15 Developer Edition and why not?
The new XPS 15 (9560) that was just announced is without a doubt one of the best 15 laptops out there being just slightly bigger than a Macbook Air.
Why, why can't we get XPS 15 Developer Edition if we already have XPS 13 Developer Edition

I'm not sure why not XPS 15, but Barton was asked this question on the linux action show:

He said something about there being a similar laptop to the XPS 15 that should cover the needs of most users and does ship with Ubuntu. The "similar" one was not the XPS 13, but I forget what model it is. Surely one of the new models announced on Barton's blog.

Probably because the Precision 5520 is very similar to the XPS 15 (9560) (IIRC the differences are in the CPU options and in the type of GPU). You can get Ubuntu 16.04 on the Precision 5520. Having an XPS 15 DE as well would be redundant.
I ended up doing this last year. I got the Precision 5510 (which is very similar to the XPS 15 (9350)) with Ubuntu 14.04. I have no major complaints with it so far.

Yep, the 5500 series is the one that maps to the XPS 15. I wish we had the resources to qualify every Dell system on Ubuntu and we would prefer to deliver fewer systems that are well supported than diluting our efforts and deliver a lesser experience.
That being said, this program has always been driven by customer input, the Precision line up itself is the result of customer demand. If we get enough feedback on a certain system or feature that will heavily influence the team (no promises but it does catch attention :)

I think the new XPS 15 is being considered by many long-time Macbook Pro owners that were underwhelmed by the new MBP (haven't upgraded), but still want a Unix-based OS (OSX or Linux). Still, I don't think many developers in that situation would be willing to move to a Windows machine.

Maybe to start, you could simply document what us users could expect with trying to run Ubuntu on the new XPS 15 9560 w/GTX 1050? It would be more efficient than buying and possibly returning.

Unfortunately the 5500 series has only intel GPU. The 1050 on the XPS 15 is really useful for people interested in GPU computing (ie tensorflow etc). If you cannot port XPS 15 9560 to Ubunti please add a dedicated GPU option to Precision 5520 (preferably 1050TI).

Karsus: in the US, that's not the case. My 5510 has a nVidia Quadro M1000. As for the 5520, I can configure one on the Dell website with Ubuntu 16.04 and a nVidia Quadro M1200. I seriously doubt that Dell will put out a 5520 with a GPU from the nVidia GTX 10xx series.

I found this thread while searching for exactly this question. I'm not considering a Precision 5500; it uses a Quadro M1200, which is just an expensive repackaging of previous-gen graphics chips. For any CUDA-based application, the M1200 is really not worth considering if there's GTX 10xx-based cards availabe (nvidia's "Quatro == Pro" marketing notwithstanding).
I agree with previous comments: the XPS 15 is being widely touted as a worthwhile replacement for a Macbook Pro. My company is looking at them for that reason. We're a development shop, so Windows is not an option. An XPS 15 DE series is absolutely worth considering. It hits a sweet spot that the Precision 5500 just misses.

I just came across this discussion, since I wanted to get an XPS15 for myself, too. So I spec'ed the Precision as closely as possible to the XPS 15 config that I wanted and ended up with these results for the Precision:
That's a very convincing argument for buying a Precision... not really.

The forum software has just trashed my first attempt, so here I go again:
At work, I have a Lenovo T580, which has a nice feature: A full-sized keyboard with number block.
General thoughts:
I think that a laptop upwards of $2000 should have a well-rounded service package to go with it, that covers the expected life span of 4-5 years. Also, the explanation about the offerings, including the service offerings, should be comprehensive and not advertise options A and B, while explaining only options C and D. It would help if the options are as orthogonal as possible.
Btw, I would like to see this machine under Linux, preferably as 2in1, too:
