U2713HM, Macbook Pro Retina, Drop-Shadow & Gradient "Banding"

My Specs:

  • Macbook Pro Retina (Mid 2012)
  • OS X 10.10.1
  • U2713HM Monitor
  • Connected to the U2713HM from my Macbook Pro via a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable
  • 2560 x 1440 resolution

My Problem:

I've noticed harsh edges on drop-shadows and gradients with extreme "banding"/ distortion (see attachment). When I set my desktop background to a lighter color everything with a drop-shadow (nearly every application window and piece of text in OS X) looks completely "off". I've tried calibrating the monitor with software but it hasn't resolved my issue. Did I receive a monitor with a bad panel? Please advise.

Unfortunately, Dell does not test/validate this monitor model on Apple hardware, ports, and software. Because of this, Dell does not have many troubleshooting steps to offer. You could post on the Apple Discussions Forum and see what they say. Some apple users have mentioned that using a thunderbolt to DP adapter has had better results.

apple thunderbolt out --> thunderbolt to DP adapter --> DP to DP cable --> Dell monitor DP in
