DW1503 help with Dell N5040

I've had my computer (Dell N5040) for two years. I just got into the swing of understanding it. And I noticed that from my DW1503 card, I'm only getting 54 mbps. Is there a way to make it go higher, or does it depend on my internet connection, and has nothing to do with my card? Just wondering. Thanks, Ashley
