Having problems with WiFi - none showing up when I open Network and Sharing Centre

Hi folks,

I have having trouble connecting to my wifi or any wifi at all. I recently had huge problems with my laptop and had to do a complete uninstall of windows. After doing this I couldn't find my original CDs that came with the laptop but the IT guy in work kindly connected me up with windows for 30 days (I think) or until I get the issue resolved. Hopefully someone can help as I've borrowed a friends dongle and don't want to use it too often. I did an ipconfig/all and got the following results:

Hi Louise,

Please share the below mentioned information with me via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation):

  • Where was the system purchased from.
  • Complete Name of the Owner.
  • Country of Purchase.

Please reply with the information. I'll be happy to assist further.

Saharsh,

Would it be possible to speak with your supervisor or somebody who is able to make a decision on my query. I do not have access to the receipt for proof of purchase. The system is meant to come with Windows 7 OS but I have no access at present to windows. Surely it is possible for you to track and trace the system to PC World. I would be grateful if somebody would contact me as soon as possible.

Many thanks

Louise.

Hi Louise,

Apologies for a late reply.

I can definitely try and arrange a call back for you from my supervisor. However, I reviewed your account thoroughly, and found that your system was shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium. The product key that is pasted beneath the system is for Windows 7 Home premium and not for Windows 7 Professional. You will need to get back to the person from whom you got the Windows 7 professional to obtain the key.

Please reply if you have any questions.

I'm confused now! Can I not just go ahead and reinstall the windows home premium with the key that is on the back of my machine?

Hi Louise,

Yes, you can certainly try reinstalling the Windows 7 Home Premium and the product key will work. The Windows product key are version specific. A Windows 7 Home Premium product will not activate Windows 7 Professional or higher version.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Saharsh,

This is what the problem has been all along though. When I tried to reinstall it would not accept the key and because of heat damage (I presume) I cannot get the correct key.

I have looking at Windows 8 on a friends laptop and it looks great so I was thinking of buying it and installing it. Will this be possible on my system?

Thanks

Louise.

Hi Louise,

Product key is not required to activate Windows if installed using a Dell Media Disk. Let me check if it is possible to ship out the Media Disks as you have not received them along the system. Dell has not tested Inspiron N5010 with Windows 8 and hence drivers are not available. You may refer to the link http://dell.to/19oXGsL for Dell Computer Support for Windows 8 Upgrade.

Please reply if you have any questions.
