WiFi in area and can't connect

I am able to connect to my wireless router in the same room. When I move to another location in my house it shows up with excellent strength but when I go to connect it only connects locally. I have had this is situations where WiFi was available and a freind could get online and I could only access it local which does not good. Please help.
