Various problems with XPS--first step
I wanted to suggest that, before panicking and trying a lot of complicated things, try shutting down and unplugging from power source before you do anything.
I have no idea why that solved my sudden issues, but it did. Spent 2 hours searching for suggestions before I found that.

That`s the first thing I do when I have a problem. Some times things hang up, by shutting down and restarting it frees it.
