Optiflex 7010 memory mistery

Hello the Dell community, I have a Dell Optiflex 7010 MT setup with an Intel i3-3220.

When I fill the 4 RAM slots with 4x 8GB the BIOS (A29) can see the 32GB but when I install Windows 10 Home the computer will not boot any more, it goes on a starting loop I guess.

If I remove I RAM stick, now we are 3x 8GB so 24GB the systems works fine...

Any clue ?    I've read some comments stating that to manage 32GB you must have Win 10 pro O/S but other that recent windows O/S includin Win 10 Home can manage up to 128 GB...

Thanks for reading,

Earlier Core I3 I5 I7 systems were limited to 24 gigs of ram due to problems with the Memory Controller Hub built into the cpu. Thats also why officially 16 gigs is max for that system.

This is not a Dell issue.

Thats why early generations of CPU had 6 memory slots and 24 gigs ram max like the precision T3500 and the XPS 9100.

You cant replace the cpu with newer because INTEL keeps changing the chipsets and sockets etc,  1366 1156 1151 1150.

LGA 1156, also known as Socket H1, is an Intel desktop CPU socket. LGA stands for land grid array. Its incompatible successor is LGA 1155. The last processors supporting it ceased production in 2011. LGA 1156, along with LGA 1366 were designed to replace LGA 775.

All of the nonsense is to force you to buy new hardware and software every 3 to 5 years.

Thanks for your answer @speedstep,

That's very interesting point. If I just replace the CPU by a 3-5 y.o. i7-3770 I should be able to reach the 32GB then ?!

I don't know that you'd be able to use 32GB RAM with the I7-3770 in a 7010, as 16GB is the listed max.  Not sure what you use your 7010 for, but I'm sure 24GB exceeds many applications minimum requirements.  I will note a RAM increase is a good way to speed up the PC if you don't know already.

SSD also speeds it up.

Correction:  Socket type for the 7010 and I3-3220 is LGA1155.  And yes, you can put a I7-3770 in it.  I think speedstep may have gotten his Optiplex's mixed up.  I too, have a 7010 with an I7-3770.

Switching to an I7-3770 will give you 106% improvement in performance according to game-debate.  It's perfect.  That's more than double the increase, 2.06x to be exact.

I wasnt discussing 7010 with 1156 socket. I was discussing the fact that 4th gen processors don't work in the 7010.   1156 is first gen. 1155 is 2nd and 3rd gen.

4th gen is another socket and 5th 6th etc is also another socket.

The MCH is not in the chipset its in the processor.  Thats why Systems from 2011 have 24 gig Tri channel ram with 24 gigs max ram.  It has to do with the number of banks that the MCH can drive as well as power etc.  Thats why server boards that have more memory use regsitered buffered ram and support 128 256 512 gigs etc.

Newer sockets and Chipsets support SMP and up to 1 Terabyte of Ram but this too is Registered ECC ram.

We got into the discussion about sockets based on the question could he upgrade 3rd gen to get 32 gigs or more ram. The answer is no.

I'm not confused about anything.  Taking snippets out of context and saying that I said something I did not is not acceptable.

The OP asked if updating the cpu to newer generation would allow 32 gigs.

The answer is no because they keep changing sockets.

That answer is not wrong.

24 gigs works but 32 gigs doesnt.

That has also been tested by the user.

The reply was discussing why newer processor would not work or allow 32 gigs to work.

Where did the OP mention 4th gen.?  OP did ask about the I7-3770, to which you, lord speedy, responded:  "You cant replace the cpu with newer because INTEL keeps changing the chipsets and sockets etc,  1366 1156 1151 1150."  That is not taken out of context.

@speedstep,

You did not mention 4th CPU's in your above posts.  You did not refer to the socket type the 7010 has.

You did not quote alleged snippit I took out of context.  Nor were you quoted.

Rather than just make the correction as I've done sometimes generally speaking, if you're going to criticize a Community Member and make allegations, at least be accurate about it.

If you were thinking 4th gen, are you sure you didn't mean LGA1150, such as in 7020 & 9020?

Or should I file it like donm4599x would? - "Rock stars are NEVER wrong, and they have massive brains, and know everything."

I found this Dell Community reference, but it's partially incorrect.  On page 55 of the 9010/7010 (they combined towers in owner's manual) it clearly states 16GB is max RAM for 7010 and 32GB for 9010.

Apparently someone was able to run 32GB in a 7010SFF.

Dell Optiplex 7010 Small Form Desktop, Intel Quad Core i7 3770 3.4Ghz, 32GB RAM, 128GB SSD Hard Drive, DVD-RW, Windows 10

Specifications:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home x64
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 - 3770 - 3.4Ghz
  • Memory: 32GB DDR3
  • Hard Drive: 128GB SSD

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Optiplex-7010-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B07HGFLTY6

and here is another one.  the list of 32GB 7010 also includes Walmart, Staples, eBay.

https://www.newegg.com/dell-optiplex-7010-home-office/p/1VK-0001-4SN73

  • Dell OptiPlex 7010 Mini Tower
  • 3rd Gen. Intel Quad Core i7-3770 3.40 GHz
  • 32 GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB Solid State Drive, DVD-RW
  • Windows 10 Pro

What is the spec of OP's 4x8 GB memory?  1600 MHz non-ECC DDR3?

OP said BIOS is A29 which is the latest for 790.  can not think of another reason why OP could not run 4x 8 GB in 7010, unless the memory specs are not right.
