This is a good overview of EMC Replication Manager. With RM a storage administrator can automate the creation, management, and scheduling of snaps and clones created on VNX, VNXe, VMAX and VPLEX arrays. DBAs can collaborate with storage administrators to automate activities like:

  • consistent split copies using Oracle hot backup mode or offline backup mode
  • non-consistent split online copies using hot backup mode or offline backup mode

The table on page 3 of of the overview is very good for Oracle DBAs as it shows the variety of specific backup options. For those interested in more Replication Manager information I suggest reading the paper: EMC Replication Manager with Oracle Database Server.

Neil,

It would be nice to see a detailed write-up on this including persistence of snaps off of a clone between refreshes of their underlying clone. The use case is that various dev/test/patch/training environments will have different shelf lives with different refresh cycles.
