Dell PowerEdge 2950 III 2TB disks usage
Hello,
I need help.
I have a server and its service tag [ADMIN NOTE: Service Tag removed per privacy policy].
I currently use 4 drives for 1 TB. Two disks in raid 1 for OS Centos, two disks in raid 1 for information. I want to replace two disks and add other two disks to 2 TB each.
Can I do it. If the server supports disks up to 2TB or more.
Thx.

I'll say yes you can do it. I did not look up the SVC Tag, do you know what RAID contoller is in there? You may want to make sure the bios's are up to date. I know the support for large drives generally got better with each update.

The PERC 6/i can handle 2TB drives just fine.
Just keep in mind that if you replace two 1TB disks one at a time, allowing each to rebuild, your array will not become automatically bigger (nor can this be done manually); you will only be able to create a second RAID 1 across those disks using the newly available RAID space (this will create a new lun or "disk"). (Or you can backup, delete, configure, restore if you need to have all 2TB of space on a single RAID 0.)

I think for ease of upgrading? I'd see if there was a way to just have all 6 drives in there. (max drives count for the config) Unless you can repurpose the other drives somewhere.

old 2 discs I do not care what to do. Important for me to leave the system on a raid with 1TB drives with capacities, and the date I can put on a new road of four discs, or build two raid.

I rather have two mirrors on the 2 TB each, not counting the raid system. As well I have the ability to transfer information, completely destroying the road and replace it with a raid of four drives, 2 TB.

Thank you all. If you have any recommendations, I would be happy.

Has anybody tested a rebuild with 2TB drives? There is a very scary note on the LSI KB about it:

(LSI 8000 series use the same LSI 1078 RoC)
