No raid controller

I have just bought a second and T3 10. It doesn't look like it has an s300 or similar raid controller in it. I just want to use it as storage for a TB of information so don't need full raid do I need a raid controller and if so so which one does everyone recommend. My current t310 has an on S s300perc6i

Thanks

If your system has a backplane, then you will need to remove it OR have a RAID card installed for it to connect to.

If your system does not have a backplane, then you can cable SATA drives directly to the motherboard.

If you don't have a RAID card, then you can NOT use SAS drives.

You should never use the S-series controllers, they are garbage. Use the PERC H700 for RAID (SAS or SATA) or the H200 if you need non-RAID SAS.

Hi, grahambrown thanks for choosing Dell. From what I see it looks like you are using a third party part component. As the community user theflash1932 advised, it's important to know this : "If your system has a backplane, then you will need to remove it OR have a RAID card installed for it to connect to." Have a great one.

Hi,  a quick question for you, what hard drive do you plan on running in your second system?

Hi i bought a joblot of 3.5" 2tb sas drives so the t310 will have 4 each and the t105 will have 2.

Well that is the plan!

OK, I have a t110II that I am playing with, well 2 of them.  One has a Pentium and the other has an i3.  I just upgraded the t110 to 32gb ram with Crucial (non-Dell) ram and 4 3tb Seagate Constellation drives (3.5 SaS, also non-Dell)  I kind of wish now that I would have dropped the coin and got the 4tb drives, the 3tb drives were a steal at $25 each though.  I wanted a separate drive for the OS so I installed a tiny ssd in the unused optical drive bay and I am running it off the sata on the motherboard.

Are you planning on running the 4 drives in a raid configuration?  What raid controller are you looking to run in the t310?

For my servers i have just used raid 0.

My t310s have 4x2tb  drives

My t105 has 2x900gb because of the issues with bios and 2tb limit

The t310s have perc6i controllers and the t105 has a sas6ir.

I am still waiting for a d385m sas cable for the t310 and 2.5" drive brackets for the t105.

I found with the t105 it would not take 2xsas drives and a sata in the motherboard.

I was just reading up on your t105.  It is similar to my t110II in that it has no on board SaS controller.  Mine also claims that you can't mix SaS and sata in the computer but mine is running fine with 4 SaS drives connected to the SaS raid controller and the ssd sata is tucked into one of the optical bays and is connected to the motherboard's on board sata connector.  It boots off of the ssd and I am in the process of setting up the raid 5 (which it is not supposed to be able to do) for the storage portion.  I am running ubuntu and haven't been able to figure out how to connect to the raid 5 in the OS.

Interesting. The sas controller is a sas6ir in the t105 dont know if that makes a difference.

I put 2x2tb sas and a 500gb sata. I found with the sas6 plugged in it could not see the sata drive in bios.

The t105 does not support uefi so also had a max 2tb

I now have no sata and 2x900gb in raid 0.

Regards

I wonder if mine can run that way because I am running an LSI controller and not one of the factory Dell PERCs.  I also figure that is why I can run non Dell drives, I have 4 new 3tb Seagate constellation drives installed with a fifth sitting on the floor for a spare.  My other T110II has 3 used Dell 3tb drives in it and I recently acquired an H200 PERC.  It looks like it can run a raid 0, 1, 10.  My LSI is setup with a raid 5.
After reading more on your system, I believe it is one or two steps behind mine as you are running DDR2 and mine is running DDR3.  They both require ECC but not registered, that makes finding ram quite a bit harder.

These are my drives.in the t310s

10 x Seagate 2TB 7.2k SAS 6G 3.5" Hard Drive HDD ST2000NM0001 A2

And these in the t105

 7 Dell EqualLogic 900GB 10K SAS 2.5'' Hard Drive - FR83F

What model is the lsi please?

Does this allow sas drives?

LSI  9260-8i   Mine came with the 512mb cache and a battery.

It runs SaS drives.  If you don't have a PS2 keyboard it can be difficult to get into the webbios.
