Unexpected sense
On our brand new Dell R420 running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with PERC H310 we get this at startup:

What dos the Unexpected sense meen, is there anything to worry about ?

The unexpected sense here appears to be associated with the backplane (Encl PD 20). If that is only happening at startup then it is probably just fine (specifically 06/29/00 (device reset) and 05/24/00 (invalid command) sense key/code/qualifiers). It is not uncommon to see those either of those key/code/qualifiers intermittently appear during normal operation, and not only associated with the backplane but also with one or more individual disks. If it is a constant thing (i.e .several times per second for extended periods) but the storage subsystem remains otherwise operational then you may just need to reseat the cables. You can look up specific sense key/code/qualifiers at www.t10.org/.../1spc-lst.htm or review an easy-to-read summary of common ones at en.wikipedia.org/.../Key_Code_Qualifier. Also note these are appearing in your log due to OMSA (Server Administrator) which is repeating them in syslog for convenience when they are reported by the storage controller. If you have more concerns we can pull a controller log with "omconfig storage controller action=exportlog controller=0" and take a look to make sure everything is healthy. Last but not least, it's a good idea to keep your firmware updated. If you aren't having any problems then quarterly or even yearly isn't bad, but if you start having problems and there is not an evident hardware fault we will likely recommend a firmware update during troubleshooting and diagnosis. And Yes, we are very happy with our new R420 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS runs without problems on that machine.
I all testing will be fine we will go for more R420.

Glad to hear that was helpful, and I appreciate you marking it Verified. Ubuntu is great on the 12G though I would want to make sure you are aware of the issues described at en.community.dell.com/.../ubuntu-on-dell-12g-poweredge-servers.aspx and en.community.dell.com/.../follow-up-ubuntu-on-dell-12g-poweredge-servers.aspx if you haven't seen those already. Just a little caveat/FYI!

I have already seen the Dell Tech Center Blog Post on that issue at en.community.dell.com/.../follow-up-ubuntu-on-dell-12g-poweredge-servers.aspx
We had no issues like that.
We are running on 3.2.0-37 Kernel so the acpi_pad, mei, sb_edac and i7core_edac bugs must be fixed.
I wish Dell would officially support Ubuntu LTS, but anyway... Everything works like charm.

Hi,
Ive got the same problem and your answer calmed me. But how could I delete the error?
Ive already cleared the alertlog (omconfig system alertlog action=clear).
But Nagios (check_openmanage) is still complaining with:
CRITICAL | 0:1 | Logical Drive '/dev/sdb' [RAID-0, 1862.50 GB] needs attention: Ready
and also "omreport storage vdisk" still shows critical:
ID : 1
Status : Critical
Name : Virtual Disk 1
State : Ready
Virtual Disk Bad Blocks : Yes
Do I have to reboot?

We have two T320 Servers with H710 Raid Controllers. They both occasionally throw a series (once or twice a week) of Unexpected sense Informational events:
Encl PD 20
5/24/00 (Illegal Request - invalid field in CDB Command Descriptor Block)
and
6/29/00 (Unit Attention - POR or device reset occurred)
It's normal.

I upgraded from a Perc H700 to a Perc H710P to increase the performance of my raid.
The first 2 disks are mirrored Sata SSD's and get this error but the 6 x Sata disks in a raid 6 are error free.
