Will a E2K-UCP-61B (PERC 6i) work in a Poweredge R510?

I have a R510 that originally came with a PERC S300 controller.  I would really like to load VMWare ESXi on this machine so I went digging for a supported controller.  I found a integrated PERC 6i (E2K-UCP-61B) in a parts machine so I pulled it apart and swapped the mounting hardware with the S300.  For some reason the card isn't initializing or showing up on boot.  Anyone have any ideas?  Should this work?

Hi,

The R510 should be able support a PERC6i card, if it is not showing up during POST ( eg : The Ctrl R option is not listed during bootup ) then it could be a possible hardware fault. Was the card working fine on the other machine? Do you see the Dell part# on the card's label for us to verify this? ( The part# should start with a country code followed by a series of characters similar to this : SG-0X123-12345-12A-12345 )

Thank you .

Regards,

DC Lim

This server will support the Perc 6/i;   it will need to be part number DX481 or T954J.    This one is YW946.   From further research, you will need this cable: 431NJ  Assembly,Cable,Redundant Array Of Integrated,SLOT4,8HD,2,R510    The cable from the S300 will not work.

Hope this helps.

Part is JT167-864-00AK or possibly CN-0WY335-13740-862-01PK-A02.  The card was working in another machine.   I don't suppose there is a way to swap the card with the one Geoff mentions is there?

I should also point out that the original tray that the card was sitting in is P/N NP007.

Thank you for the additional information. The controller you have came in a sled, which NP007 is part of.  The R510 will only use a Perc 6/i, no sled. The part numbers suggested previously are the 2 that are available for this server.  Here is the SKU for the kit, which includes the cable(s): 342-0866 PERC 6i RAID Controller for R510, 8 Hard Drive Chassis Customer Install.  The kit runs 299.00 from Dell.

Thanks Geoff, I will consider ordering the item you posted above.  Is there a drive compatibility list for this card?

You are correct on the sled.  I pulled the card from the sled and installed the back plate from the PERC S300.

This card will work with Enterprise class SATA and SAS drives. It will handle up to 2TB SATA drives, and 600GB SAS drives.

Hope this helps!
