2400 Bios / ESM problem

I've been told by Dell's uk support that i need to update both the BIOS & ESM on my 2400, simply as the diagnostics are picking up an issue with the ESM. Being that the box is 5 years old now, is it worth just replacing the motherboard? if so is the ESM located on the motherboard or somewhere else?
