Memory Upgradation.

Hi,

I am using Dell PowerEdge R710 server, right now having 24GB of memory in that sever.Current Configuration is

DIMM_A1 8,192.0MB
DIMM_A2 8,192.0MB
DIMM_A3 8,192.0MB

I want to upgrade my memory. So I want to use 16 Gb memory.Could you please suggest me can I use 3 x 16 gb memory in other slots and what is the speed will support.

Thanks

Sairam Jena,

With a single processor installed you would have to add the 3x 16GB dimms to slot A1, A2, and A3. Then place the 8GB dimms in slots A4, A5, and A6.

That will ensure that the channels match and will allow you to use all the dimms.

In regards to the speeds, it will depend on the dimms installed and their configuration.

  • For single- or dual-rank memory modules:
    • One memory module per channel supports up to 1333 MHz.
    • Two memory modules per channel supports up to 1066 MHz. (Per BIOS revision on May 15, 2009, support was added for two modules per channel at 1333 MHz speed.)
    • Three memory modules per channel are limited to 800 MHz regardless of the memory module speed.
  • For quad-rank memory modules:
    • One memory module per channel supports up to 1066 Mhz.
    • Two memory modules per channel are limited to 800 MHz, regardless of memory module speed.

Hope this helps clarify things.

Hello Chris,
Thanks for your valuable information.I think now a days 1066 MHz memory is not available. But my all 8 GB memory configuration is ........
Module Size: 8GB
Package: 240-pin DIMM
Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Quad Ranked • Registered • ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 1024Meg x 72 •
Could you please suggest now which memory module speed I can purchase so that both old and new memory will work together.
Thanks
Sai
