NIVDIA NVS 310 installation on T440 and iDRAC9 can't detect GPU

I have installed GPU NIVDIA NVS 310 (Dell part # K3WRC ) on my T440 (2 CPUs and 2 system fans,  2 750W PUs).

Somehow, iDRAC can not detect the CPU is installed.

Any suggestion?

Hi,

 

I've checked, there is no firmware update available in the Dell support site for downloads. Though, have you tried updating the hardware driver, the firmware package might be included. Can you check in lifecycle logs to see if there is any errors pertaining to the GPU? Have you tried soft reset the iDRAC?

 

There are reports about GPU not being detect in iDRAC and there are fixes coming for iDRAC firmware update in April.

Can Nivdia driver detect the card even though iDRAC fails to show it on the system overview?

I would give it a try. As it is somehow detected in the system (iDRAC and LCC) it might work, though.

Thank all replies.

I installed NVS 310 in one of Dell desktop with Windows 10 installed.  Windows 10 was able to identified it as Nvidia NVS 310 without an addition driver.  I also installed the latest driver from Nvida and the installation pack had no complain of GPU.  I ran the GPU stress test and it was fine.

I put the GPU back into T440, and iDRAC can't detect GPU. I think that Joey is right that there is a bug in iDRAC9.

Since NVS 310 only use 20W or less, the PU requirement for 1100W is recommended.

I had same issues you are facing. try the following steps:

From System BIOS -> Integrated devices ->  Embedded video Controller -> change to "Disabled"

Memory mapped I/O base -> from  56 Tb to 12Tb.

After that, just download and install the correct NVIDIA drivers on the OS you are running.

The question here is, does the card work in the host OS?

From my point of view, we should focus on this first. As Joey mentioned, it looks like a bug in iDRAC firmware, so this is just a "cosmetical" issue, for now.

 

The settings in BIOS will take effect right before the host os boots, I can't imagine that this will do a change on the behavior of iDRAC.

After I've applied those changes and install the NVDIA drivers on the OS I was able to use the GPU card

reboot - F2 (System Setup) -> System BIOS -> System BIOS Settings -> Integrated Devices 

Check the options

Embedded Video Controller -> Default is Enabled (Switch to Disabled)

Memory Mapped I/O Base -> Default is 56 TB (change to 12 TB)

apply changes and install nvdia drivers on the OS.

Thanks for the update.

I had checked over and over again, and there is no option for "Embedded video Controller" under System BIOS -> Integrated devices even cold boot the system and iDRAC.

Interested to me is that Lifecycle has reported GPU. Something is disconnected here...

Yes, the card is supported.

My question is, is it also seen in the host OS on the T440?

What OS do you run on that machine?

 

Regardless of what the iDRAC shows, and btw. iDRAC does see the card as you can see on the screenshot you posted before, it shows on slot 3 Description: GF119 [NVS 310], so it is detected.

 

Do you see the card in the host OS?

From the initial question, it just appears that the card is not completely managed by iDRAC. The TO never mentioned if the card works in OS or not.

That's why my last question here - does it work in OS?

I installed my NVS 310 into one of my Inspiron desktops with running Windows 10, the Windows 10 was able to identify the video card.

Installed the latest driver from Nvida, and checked the task manager, the GPU option was available (As I posted previous messages).

According to the T440 spec (https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/Shared-Content_data-Sheets_Documents/en/PowerEdge-T440-Spec-Sheet.pdf), the NVS 310 is listed.

However, novahertz brought my attention that I did have a problem of finding "Embedded Video Controller" (Thank novahertz!!)

yes i confirm that the card is well seen in the OS.

As Stefan said I think that this card is not well managed on the idrac.
