Poweredge R440 CPU upgrade failure

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Poweredge R440 with 2 Intel Xeon Silver 4108 1.8 GHz CPUs. I needed to upgrade them to the 4208 2.1 GHz so I could properly run ISE on the server. But when I removed the old CPUs and installed the new ones, I powered on the computer and during the boot process I got an error that said that there wasn't any memory installed.

Considering there was 128GB of RAM plugged in, all recently tested and working....I had a feeling the CPU was the problem. When I put the old CPUs back in, the server booted just fine.

I've seen these Dell servers sold with the 4208 CPUs in them so I assume they are supposed to work on the computer. Is there something special I'm supposed to do to make them work? In my experience just plugging in the CPU has been enough but this time seems to be different.

Thanks for your time.

Hello,

Part # 338-BVKI         - Intel Xeon Gold 6248R 3.0G, 24C/48T, 10.4GT/s, 35.75M Cache, Turbo, HT (205W) DDR4-2933, Customer Kit

And

Part# P61HH -         ASSY,PRC,6248,2.5,27.5MB,FRU. Intel, 2.5GHz, 27.5MB, FSB 10400MHz, Phenom, Server, ASSY Processor

Both the 6248R and 6248 show to be compatible with R440.

The first one is a sales part number and shows to be 6248R
The second one is service part number and shows to be 6248.

Which process are you doing?

Original config 1 CPU only. Customer wants additional CPU (same kind)

Original config 1 CPU only. Customer wants to upgrade existing CPU

Original config 1 CPU only. Customer wants to upgrade and add 2nd CPU

Original config 2 CPU. Customer wants to upgrade both CPUs

It depends on what you are doing that you also needs the correct heat sink.

It also depends on your region. Complex Upgrade requires use of regional processor upgrade guides.

It is best to contact Sales in your region and give them your criteria and they can get you the quote for all the correct parts to order.

The link seems to be working now

Hello,

i confirm, when installing a new CPU there are no modification to do. In this case there is maybe an compatibility issue or the new CPU is failed. Did you test it in another server?T
Thanks

Marco

I didn't test it in another server because this is the only one I have. However I did have 2 different CPUs and both of them, when socketed into the CPU1 slot, give the same error.

It seems highly unlikely that I would have 2 brand new CPUs fail out of the box. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Hello gmckelvey,

I would recommend you update BIOS  to current 2.8.1  (if not already)  for updated processor and memory reference code.

BIOS 2.8.1

Did you get the heatsinks for the upgrade?

Upgrading both CPUs. Must replace existing heatsink with 412-AAJQ (for CPU1)  and include heatsink 412-AALK (for CPU2)

Thanks the BIOS update did the trick.

Wow, I was running an old BIOS. It was still running version 1.2.11

@DELL-Young E

Can I have this link again functional please?

I have exactly the same question as PortalNET2

I have been miss-lead greatly here and Dell doesn't make this easy aye?

When I entered into support.dell.com and entered my service tag number, under "processor upgrades" which I would have expected Dell have already sorted this out and presented me with ONLY COMPATIBLE processors.

The CPU Intel Xeon Gold 6248 2.5GHz Twenty Core Processor, 20C/40T, 10.4GT/s, 27.5M Cache, Turbo, HT (150W) DDR4-2933 is presented to me as a vaiable option to upgrade.

Next of all, I went to Technical Documentation for Dell R440

https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/shared-content_data-sheets_documents/en/poweredge-r440-technical-guide.pdf

On the Page 19, I have confirmed that Xeon Gold 6248 is listed.

Then I extracted Xeon Gold 6248 and tried to use it with the Server Dell R440 ...

I get an Error UEFI0384

Processor TDP higher than the system power limit

I am trying to find how can I make this work. I upgraded the BIOS to

2.21.1

No Difference did this make...

Can anyone confirm if this CPU is supported and if it is not supported.. can anyone tell me why is this listed as supported in Technical Sheet and available to me to chose from when I try to upgrade straight from Dell upgrade website?
