R620 144GB RAM DIMM Layout ?!

Hi,

I have a Dell R620 with 18 DIMM Dual Rank DDR3 [ 8GB 2Rx4 PC3 10600R 1333MHz ] modules, totaling 144GB.

How should the layout be, I have gone through [ Dell PowerEdge R620 Owner's Manual ] but it does not properly explain how to use 144GB DIMM with 2 processor. I understand its just a sample configuration but its quite confusing.

Currently I have installed A1 to A9 and B1 to B9 but the system only detects up to 128GB. I'm unsure how to go about this.

Thank You

Huud,

That should be correct, as the voltages would self regulate..

Hope this helps.

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell.

Memory configuration: Dual processor does not have 144GB that's why it's not working.

Is all DIMM modules are same model?

Can you check whether memory information shown in all slots in iDRAC?

Can you remove DIMM from A9 and B9 and see whether it is showing 128GB. If it is showing 128 then you can either swap the memory or try populating the 2 DIMM in another slot to see whether there is any issue with memory modules.

Hi @DELL-Shine K

Please find current configuration

I removed the A9 and B9 and inserted them into A11 and B11, and now the below error appears.

Also at different time same error appears for different slots, previously it was showing for A3 and A11, even though no DIMM were swapped.

iDRAC was uo to date, BIOS updated aa well.

Memory modules are not Dell, mix of Samsung and HP.

All 144GB were working fine around end of Dec 2022. I was travelling for a month, returned and these errors started to appear.

Looks like a memory module issue. Is the memory module from Dell? Did you have latest BIOS and iDRAC FW installed on the server?

Hello, looks like iDRAC is just not recognizing the memory. And as you were saying since it's not a Dell part, there's not much we can help with, I'm afraid.

Apologies was away from the server due to work.

Thanks for the update on this, I can understand, however, something I'm unable to understand.

Currently the situation is that if I add memory modules to the slots causing issues the server fails to start, if I add memory modules into the next available slots as per the manual then the server does not allow to have gaps in the memory slots.

Not sure how to get around this limitation as this makes the remaining memory slots unusable.

Also I'm looking to add 32GB modules with the existing 8GB ones, for the 2 process configuration I can see in the manual 16 and 8 but not 32 and 8. Can somone confirm if the 2 different sizes can be installed and will work without issues ?

Thank You

@Dell -Charles R

Thanks for clarifying on the different sizes.

As for testing the DIMMs, sounds like some serious time will have to be spent, will test them and update how it goes.

Hello huud,

Those are some Sample memory configurations.

If you have different DIMMs, follow the memory guide lines Page 41.

Install the largest DIMM first in the channel then the smaller DIMMs

Instead of 16 and 8 you would put 32 and 8

Dell PowerEdge R620 Owner's Manual

https://dell.to/3NJPADE

System Memory Pages 39-46

If you suspect a bad DIMM then try this

Populate A1 and B1 and test

Boot to  F11 on Dell Splash screen, selecting  Boot Manager -> System Utilities -> Launch Dell Diagnostics

If they test ok, remove those two DIMMs and put other two DIMMs in A1 and B2 and test. Do this until you cycle through all your DIMMs.

Then populate DIMMs. If you get an error in slot, Swap that DIMM with a DIMM in a different channel and test to see if error follows the DIMM or stays in the slot.

Hi @Dell -Charles R

Can you pleae correct my understanding, how is the memory to be tested.

1 DIMM in A1, 1 DIMM in B1 - Test these

Then the above same DIMM in A2 and B2 then test them again ? (This is to find faulty RAM slots)

or

1 DIMM in A1 and B1, test them, then another DIMM in A1 and B1 ? (As understood, this will only determine the faulty DIMMs)

Thank You

Hi @DELL-Young E

Tested and found 1 DIMM to be faulty, removed it and Server running fine now.

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM.

Currently I have 8x16GB (128) RAM, I'm looking to add 128 GB more. As I only have 6 free memory banks, I'm looking for 32GB DIMMS.

My current DIMM specification is 2Rx4 PC3 10600R (which I understand is an RDIMM), what I'm being offered is 4Rx4 PC3L-10600L RAM DDR3 (which I understand is LRDIMM), and as per Dell the 2 should not be mixed.

On a different store I found DDR3-1333 RDIMM PC3-10600R 4Rx4, will this work with my existing DIMMS, and what about the 4Rx4 ?

Thank You
