R710 memory upgrade
Hello,
I had an issue lastnight upgrade the memory in my R710 server. It currently has 48GB of memory and I want to add another 96GB.
The current memory layout in the server is as following:
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_1 - 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L - 10600R - 9 -10 - E1
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_4 - 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L - 10600R - 9 -10 - E1
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_7
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_2 - 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L - 10600R - 9 -10 - E1
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_5 - 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L - 10600R - 9 -10 - E1
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_8
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_3 - 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L - 10600R - 9 -10 - E1
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_6 - 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L - 10600R - 9 -10 - E1
DIMM_BANK_A_SLOT_9
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_1
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_4
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_7
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_2
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_5
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_8
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_3
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_6
DIMM_BANK_B_SLOT_9
What I did lastnight was to add 16GB DDR3-1333 RDIMM LV 2RX4 ECC (SNPMGY5TC/16G) into B1/B4 B2/B5 B3/B6 but the memory didn't show up. Checked BIOS and everything looked OK. In the end I removed the 48GB and put in the 96GB which worked.
Can anyone please tell me what I did wrong?
Thanks

To use all the slots you need 2 cpu's installed, each cpu controls 9 memory slots.

Hi Shkasim,
Thank you for your post.
Assuming you have a PowerEdge R710, you can use 8GB memory modules (both 1066MHz and 1333MHz) in this system - if you wanted, you could have 72GB of memory using 6 8GB memory modules and 6 4GB memory modules - in this configuration, both sets of DIMMs would need to be dual-ranked and the same speed. Also, the system would need to have BIOS version v2.1.9 and upwards. This is the only configuration that would work with mixed capacity DIMMs of 4GB and 8GB.
If you want to remove the 4GB DIMMs, you can have 48GB, 64GB, 80GB, 96GB, 128GB or 144GB using 8GB DIMMs.
Hope that answered your query but if there is anything else, please get back in touch.
