Which Motherboard do I have? Poweredge 2800 server.

I have an old (2006) Poweredge 2800 server with one Xeon single core 64 bit processor in it. I have heard that my motherboard may be compatible with the dual core Xeons (Paxville) and would like to take advantage of this. I see that only some of the motherboards which came with the 2800 are dual-core compliant.

Before I make a purchase I would like to confirm that my motherboard is compatible with the Paxville CPUs.

Where is the part number / model number of my motherboard?

The sticker on the board states that it is an A04 version. I assume this is the BIOS rev. and I will be flashing A07 today.

The Changelog of the BIOS update states that they added dual-core support in A04.

I can supply pictures if you need. Thanks for your help.

First, your system will probably have to be a 2800 II.  The 2850 had a II revision, but I don't know if the 2800 did.  It will have a II in a circle in the upper-left corner of the front chassis plate, and OMSA may show the revision in the System Information screen.

Second, your part number will be "somewhere" on the motherboard, as something like XX-0YT224-XX....., where YT224 is the actual part number.

I don't have any DC procs to test with (and I'd have to see if any of my 2800/2850 have the XC320), but there are several reliable indications that it will:

you made my day. Mine is the xc320 and according to a quick google search I should be able to install paxville dual core Xeon 2.8ghz processors. can anyone confirm this?

I want to comment on what you said earlier, I don't have the 2800 II. AFAIK. Only the regular 2800. I accepted your answer based on how to find my motherboard model number.

Just keeping things straight for future viewers.

It may not have gotten the moniker "II", like the 2850 did (not sure why), but the hardware (minus the obvious form-fitting parts) is identical between the two (for example, the XC320 is a validated part for both) ... I just didn't have any 2800's to verify whether or not it did indeed have a "II" ... good to know that, whatever the reason for the difference, that the 2800 does not actually carry the II identifier.

Take care.

I think there were two variations of the 2800, like you said. I think the regular 2800 was a giant tower server while the "II" was the smaller rack mountable version. That's what it looks like from a google search.

No, all 2800's would be a tower chassis; the 2850 is the rackmount version of the 2800 ... both were released at the same time (nearly all tower systems have a rackmount counterpart - 2900/2950, 2600/2650, T610/R610, etc.).  When the update was given to the 2850 to 'II' status, the same changes were made to the 2800, they just apparently did not give it a 'II' distinction, for whatever reason.

Thank you for clearing that up. I am very new to servers in general. I just received this PE2800 for free. It was bare, No RAM, No HDDs, only one processor.  Before this I was using an old desktop with Ubuntu server install to the bare metal. Now I've got ESX 3.5 installed with ubuntu server and windows 7. It's been a learning experience.

Sound like fun :) (and the best way to get into it).

Take care.
