PowerPath on AIX cleaning up ODM definitions and impacts on rootvg

Hello All,

I have the below scenario with the customer...

When a clone group is mapped to the AIX host , the disks are not visible as pseudo disks. Customers using latest version of PowerPath and AIX ODM defensins are upto date. The storage is from PowerStore

The customer uses a script to perform the below actions.

PowerStore volume group, which contains data spread out across multiple volumes, is cloned in PowerStore using the GUI or the REST API.  And then the PowerStore clone is mounted on a test AIX system:

  1. ‘init’ – load the data from the clone into an AIX volume group using ‘importvg’
  2. ‘refresh’ – unmount the AIX volume group, refresh the data in PowerStore using REST API, remount the AIX volume group
  3. ‘clean’ – unmount the AIX volume group with ‘exportvg’, and delete the PowerStore clone using REST API.

So when the customer creates a new Clone VG and mapped to the host. It's not appearing on the server.

Customer followed the right procedure to clean up the disks from previous un-mappings as mentioned below.

1. Tried removing the host mapping, pseudo disk, and linked hdisks for the 2 PowerStore volumes which are the source for the 2 cloned volumes.

2. Tried adding the host mappings back and running cfgmgr, powermt config and powermt save, but the pseudo disks did not get recreated.

PowerPath support sent an article to cleanup the KB article about cleaning up ODM here: 000047167 : https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000047167/emc-odm-how-to-clean-up-aix-odm-definitions

The customer is concerned about performing this procedure since the rootvg is coming from PowerStore.

Appreciate all your feedback
