Dell Modular Disk Storage Hardware Provider service terminates during VSS Backup
On my Windows 2012 Hyper-V Failover cluster, using 2 R710 Servers with iSCSI and MD3220I SAN. During backup (Altaro Hyper-V Backup), I am getting these 3 errors from both servers during the nightly backup. Service has been set to restart.
"The Modular Disk Storage Hardware Provider service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service. ** EventID: 7031"
"Faulting application name: SMPROV~1.EXE, version: 10.84.26.2, time stamp: 0x50405699 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.2.9200.16579, time stamp: 0x51637f77 Exception code: 0xc0000374 Fault offset: 0x00000000000ebd59 Faulting process id: 0x414 Faulting application start time: 0x01ce9f773f388ae3 Faulting application path: C:\PROGRA~2\Dell\MDSTOR~1\VDS_VSS\provider\SMPROV~1.EXE
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: d9128602-0c14-11e3-940c-dc509918130b
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID: ** EventID: 1000"
"An attempt was made to issue a command to a password protected storage system and the correct password is not known. ** EventID: 5004"
I have contacted Altaro and their support has never seen these errors and they claim they are just doing a VSS backup, nothing special. My Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster has never seen these errors for over 2 years.
Anybody help here???

Hello TomBosko,
1. Is your premium features enabled on your MD?
2. If you do have premium features enabled can you run a test of a snap shot from in MDSM?
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

My setup is almost identical to Tom's except I'm running Veeam Backup & Recovery v7. I'm getting all three of the exact same error messages.

I'd rather disable it and not get the message as I use Dell Appassure product and that seems redundant..

Hello TomBosko,
I did some checking and the error that you are getting is happening due to no Premium Features & it is trying to use the snapshot virtual disk feature. You can use the snapshot feature as it does have a trail period but one that expires then you will need to purchase the feature to keep using the feature.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I asked Veeam support about this and this was their response:
"To resolve this issue you should look at the configuration of your storage connection. Every 24 hours Veeam performs automatic object/topology discovery action to check whether anything changed in your environment or not. The same procedure is triggered when you run the backup job, this is required for VM backup operation. Now reading back through the error message above, I would recommend contacting Dell support to verify where this password protection option is configured. Once you disable this option or configure some sort of trust relationship between Dell storage and Veeam backup proxy/backup server, this error should go away."
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi Sam,
From what you are saying, it sounds like it is ok to ignore all of the related messages?
Having the SMProvider.exe crash on every backup is a little concerning so it would be good to have this confirmed.
Also, can you tell me how I can get a trial of the features? I would like to use that as a way of confirming these issues are in fact related to the missing premium feature.
Thanks,
Aaron

For what its worth, Dell Support had me uninstall the MD VSS Provider service which uninstalled the service that was crashing. My backup vender (Altaro) confirmed they were not using that provider, only the Microsoft VSS provider. My backups are running fine and I no longer have to ignore this error.
Dell Service Request (Removed by moderator) for reference.
Thanks,

there is an Uninstall PowerVault Modular Disk Storage Provider.exe (can't remember the name exactly) located under C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell\MD Storage Software\VDS-VSS folder. Simply ran this and it removes the provider service.

I had already removed my vm's from host and rebooted just in case but it didn't ask me to. Just to be safe I rebooted.
