Upgrading RAM Dell NX3230

Hi Guys,

I need to re-provision this NX3230 as a server.   Can I install Windows Server 2012 R2 and upgrade the ram to 64GB RAM.   Is the limitation of RAM BIOS based or is it just arbitrary?

Thank you,

Jay

Hello Jay,

With the NX3230 it is built on an PER730xd. So if you are wanting to repurpose your NX3230 then you will need to load the Bios for a R730xd to ensure that the new memory is seen correctly. Yes you can install windows 2012R2 as that OS is support on the PER730xd.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello, I have installed the R730XD Bios on my NX3230 system and it still only sees 32GB.  I had 16GB and added 48GB.  Is there anything else I need to do for this system to see all 64GB of RAM?  I noticed that the Bios did update from 2.2 to 2.8 however on the initial splash screen it still says Dell NX3230.  Should that change to R730XD after this Bios upgrade?  I'm running Windows Server 2012r2

Thanks,

Mike

Hello Mike,

If you changed the bios from the NX3230 to the R730xd bios, then it should show the R730xd bios when the system is booted.  I would try to flash the bios again to get it to see R730xd bios.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

I did install the BIOS update again and it still only recognizing 32GB of memory.  After the upgrade, when it boots, the first screen shows the BIOS (2.8) and above that it still shows system as an NX3230.  I am running the Bios update file named "BIOS_2FRF_WN64_2.8.0.EXE" that I downloaded from the Dell R730XD support page.

I noticed while installing the BIOS that the app shows both the R730XD and NX3230 models as systems this BIOS supports.  So, while the BIOS did update (was at v2.2 and now is v2.8) it did not change the server model to reflect R730XD.  Is there a different BIOS update file that I should try?  Perhaps one that supports only R730XD and not the NX3230?

Thanks.

Hello Mike,

Here is the latest bios for the R730xd, I would try this one and see if it changes it to an R730xd.

Hi,

I installed the BIOS file that you recommended but it is still booting as an NX3230 and not an R730XD.  I noticed when installing the BIOS that is lists both the R730XD and NX3230 as systems supported by this new BIOS.

Once again, after the BIOS is updated it shows "NX3230" at the top of the screen and the BIOS is now at version 2.9.1.  Is there anything else that needs to be done for the system to recognize more than 32GB of memory?  I have 64GB installed but it only sees 32GB.  Thank you.

Hello Mike,

In which slots do you have populated with your memory modules?  Which type of memory modules do you have in your NX3230?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

I originally had 2 white slots with 8GB memory modules and I filled the remaining 6 white slots with 8GB modules.  All are PC4-2400 ECC Registered RDIMM.  Again, it is recognizing 4 modules but not all 8 modules.

Hello Mike,

Do you have 2 processors in your NX3230 or a single processor?  If you only have a single processor then you will need to populate both the white & black slots that are connected to that processor.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi,

I have it seeing all 64GB now.  It is a single processor and I had populated the white slots, not the white and black for processor 1.  Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Mike
