Precision 3510 2nd hard drive part2

Question

Although I started a post about this when I first ordered my 3510 I cannot reply to that post so I'm starting again. I have managed to install a 2nd hard drive into my 3510. The unit was ordered with the NVMe 512GB drive which, for reasons known only to the creature that designed the 3510, means that the space that a 2.5' SATA drive could go in, is blocked. Only by a few cubic millimetres though. After purchasing cable 4G9GN,  a SATA to M.2 adapter and a £25 240GB Kingston SSD the installation required a small amount of double sided tape to hold things in place. I would like a 3D printed bracket but that's probably overkill.       The system recognised the drive immediately and appears quite happy. I will try and report back on performance and any issues (if the forum allows).

Hi Simon,I've seen this problem on other laptops (HP) but it still seems crazy to me that they would waste this space inside the laptop - and also the upgrade option.Did you attempt to install a drive?   Maybe a 7mm drive would fit?  Maybe taking the plastic cover off the 2.5' SSD would help it fit?Also, it looks like your unit doesn't have the mounting bracket for 2.5':https://www.ebay.com/itm/163799710350How did you secure the m.2/sata adapter?  Maybe it could be glued to the 2.5' bracket?Thanks,Doug

Thanks for posting the pictures. It may solve a storage issue for me. How has the second drive setup worked for you? My child inherited my wife's Precision 3510 and only has 4 GB free on the hard drive. My wife only needed it for work, so she got the 128 GB M2 SSD. My child is into digital animation, so they need storage space. Also, do you have the 4 or 6 cell battery? My laptop has the 6 cell battery. I'm hoping there's space for me to add the drive the way you did, but I have a feeling I'll need to clone the current drive to a larger one.
