The intel CPU and chipset family in your Precision 7740 are only PCIe 3.0.  The CPU has 16 lanes all dedicated to the GPU and the CM246 Chipset has 24 lanes.  16 of the chipset lanes have been split into 4 m.2 NVME ports (4x4 = 4 slots at 4 lanes each)

Intel has been dragging their feet getting into the PCIe 4.0 game, the upcoming 11th generation CPUs will finally be getting 4.0 support.  The catch on that for laptops is that the chipset supplied lanes will still be 3.0, and any machine with a dedicated GPU will use up most or all of the CPU supplied 4.0 lanes.

Thanks JamesJAB1 for the information, at least I can stop trying to find a fault that clearly isn't there.

I'm surprised Tech. Support couldn't have given that to me from the start.  They assured me that the 4x4 meant 4th Gen with 4 Lanes.  Their Specification page is also quite misleading why can't they simply just state 3rd Gen 4 lanes, simple then!

When the 7740 came out there where no PCIe 4.0 laptops yet and AMD had just started releasing the first PCIe 4.0 Desktop CPUs.  There really was no reason to specify the PCIe generation as everyone's CPUs and motherboard supplied PCIe interfaces had already gone to 3.0.

@JamesJAB1  Fair enough that makes sense, it's a good job the Samsung 980 Pro is backward compatible!

I do have another query that you may know the answer to or do I need to raise this as a new Thread/Discussion?

When I install the Samsung 980 Pro SSD, by itself, into Slot 6, the system boots fine and see's it correctly, the Samsung software tells me that it is fitted in a 3rd Gen x4 interface, and I can see the SSD Health, Temperature, Read & Write speeds etc.

However, I have two other SSD's and if I fit these into the system, with the Primary boot SSD in Slot 6, the system won't boot, even though I have specified the Samsung as the boot drive in the BIOS.

In fact, with two or more SSD's fitted then it appears to me that the boot drive has to be in Slot 5, however with the Samsung SSD in this Slot, or even Slots 3 & 4 by itself for that matter, the system reports compatibility issues even though it seems to run ok.  see image attached

Again Technical Support won't help at all as I didn't buy the SSD from them.

Surely is Slots 3, 5 & 6 are all 3rd Gen x4 then it should show the SSD correctly, or is there a setting in the BIOS.

got the same issue here... bought 4X SB-RKT4P-2TB NVMe Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 and installed them into the laptop... the laptop would not even boot up...

i have another 7740 that has 4X SB-BKT0-2TB Rocket NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 that i didnt had any problem at install and running them... they just work perfectly... happy to find your info because that will save me a sh... ton of work finding out what the problem was...

yep... its a love/hate relation with those 7740.. but since i come from 3X M6600 Precision... i know those can take a sh... load of work and still run... the proff.. i still run 2X of those M6600 here..

again.. its greath that you found that out ...

Great info. 

Just to add on, it seems the 7560 has the same issue, which seems a little strange for a mobo that runs an i9 11950H, but here we are.  I upgraded two Samsung 980 1TB drives (gen 3) to two Samsung 980 PRO 1TB drives, and got only gen 3 speeds from them.  Fortunately, I am able to RMA the drives, so I'm only out shipping for the return,  but it's quite disappointing.

@Jimothy1st​ I ran the Samsung 980 Pro on a PCIe 3.0 laptop and it was great.  Then I got a Kingston Fury Renegade and all hell broke loose.  It claims backward compatibility, but I don't see it happening.  Wonder if anyone knows the trick to run that SSD on a pcie 3.0 precision laptop
