The computer was only working with power lead plugged in, the battery died a long time ago, I only use this laptop as I have some software that won’t work on windows 10.

I suspect battery light flashing for 10 seconds is either a failed battery or a motherboard problem.
Since the computer is 10 years old, you ever replace the motherboard (coin cell) battery with a new one? Signs of a bad coin cell battery failure are incorrect computer date and time settings, computer occasionally turns off or doesn’t start.
Please post exact model number for further assistance. If you don't know, enter the service tag number onto the link below. After, you should be able to see exact model number in your Dell Product Support page.

How to find the product model of your Dell computer | Dell US
In meantime, does the computer runs only AC adapter power (or without battery) ?
Does the battery light still blinks without the battery installed in the battery bay?
How old is the computer ?
Dell PC does not turn on or boot into Windows | Dell US
