Dell Laser Printer 1720dn will not print

I received a replacement printer and have installed it.  The 1720dn has been assigned an address by my router and it can be pinged.  Pressing the Continue button on the printer or clicking on "Print Network Settings" will print a page.  However, the printer will not print from MS Word or an e-mail from Outlook.  In the printers list, the status in online, but when the print windows comes up in the lower right, it states that toner status is unknown because the printer is offline.  What have I missed?   All the printer settings seem to be accurate.
