V313w - won't print in black and white without replacing the color cartridge

Quick question:

My printer now gives me an error message that I must replace the color cartridge in order to print something in black and white. The color ink cartridge has been empty for at least 1 year and this just happened.

Is there a way to bypass this or am I now forced to replace the color cartridge. 

Things I've done so far.

1. Pushed the button on the front of the printer to "Black"

2. When printing the document - under printing preferences - used "print only black ink only"
