Precision 370: TSST corp CDRW/DVD TSH 492B - Cannot Write to CD

Hey All...

I can't seem to find out anywhere if the CD-RW discs that I have (Office Depot, 700mb, 1x - 4x) will work for the TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD TSH 492B drive (it's a 48x). I've looked for 48x RW discs and those don't seem to exist!

I'm not saavy enough about this kind of media to know if the reason I can't write to the CD (just trying to copy files from my hard drive to backup) is because I've got the wrong discs or because the drive is screwy. and I've search Dell, Toshiba and just the web in general to try and find an answer. Maybe I'm not asking the right question... :-)

Anyway, if anybody has any ideas I'd really appreciate your thoughts...

1 - 4X Media is usually the RW variety.
40X or faster media is usually the write once type.

hi speedstep, thanks for replying.

i've progressed a bit in troubleshooting this, but still can't write to the disc. i'm able to read & format the disc through either windows media player 10. once i've formatted the disc (as an audio cd) in windows media player the disc is recognized but when i try to burn i get the following prompt:

"Windows Media Player cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs."

i reduced the write speed first to 4x (the rw discs i have are 1x - 4x) - didn't work. then 2x - didn't work. i replaced the disc with a fresh blank cd-rw and started again - still no go. WMP starts the burn, converts, tells me that the burn is in progress til about 70-80% completed and then prompts me with the above.

thru my computer, (after i've formatted the disc in wmp as a data disc) i select the drive and 'write these files to cd' (files that i setup earlier to burn). i get the cd writing wizard, but get booted from the wizard with the prompt "Cannot Complete the CD Writing Wizard. There was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable."

i'm going to try another type of cd-rw. Do you have a recommendation for media to use? the discs i'm using now are office depot wammo brand, so maybe that's the problem. i'm going to keep plugging away. at least i know that the drive is able to read previously formatted discs and format them, just can't write.

sorry to be so long-winded.  :smileyhappy:  but thanks for any advice.
