RecoverPoint 4 and SRA version

We are planning on upgrading our RPA's from 3.5 SP1 to 4.0 SP2.   We are running VMware 4.1 SP3 vCenter and ESX host Servers.  For RecoverPoint Version 4, can we upgrade to VMware version 5.0 SP3 and use SRA 2.0 or must we upgrade to VMware version 5.1 and SRA 2.1?

Thanks,

John

Download "EMC_RecoverPoint_Storage_Replication_Adapter_Version_2.2.zip" from VMware and extract "RecoverPoint_Storage_Replication_Adapter_2.X_ReleaseNotes.pdf"

Page 3:

RecoverPoint SRA 2.0 supports VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Server 5.0 and later with RecoverPoint 3.4 SP1 and later.

RecoverPoint SRA 2.1 is a 64-bit application that supports VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Server 5.1 and later with

RecoverPoint 3.5 SP1 and later.

Site Recovery Manager 4.X is not supported with RecoverPoint 4.0 and later.

Here is the link to VMware Compatibility Guide (SRM specific):

VMware Compatibility Guide: sra

Partner Name SRA Name SRM Version(s)
EMC EMC RecoverPoint Storage Replication Adapter 2.0 SRM 5.0 Update 3, SRM 5.0 Update 2, SRM 5.0 Update 1, SRM 5.0
EMC EMC RecoverPoint SRA 2.2 SRM 5.5 Update1, SRM 5.5, SRM 5.1 Update2, SRM 5.1 Update1, SRM 5.1
EMC EMC RecoverPoint Storage Replication Adapter 2.1 SRM 5.1 Update2, SRM 5.1 Update1, SRM 5.1

EMC RecoverPoint Storage Replication Adapter 2.0 supports RecoverPoint 3.5 and 3.5.1.0

EMC RecoverPoint Storage Replication Adapter 2.1 supports RecoverPoint 3.5.1

EMC RecoverPoint SRA 2.2 supports RecoverPoint 4.0 SP1

What bugs me is the lack of info on backward compatibility!

I am currently on RP 3.5.1.0, SRM 5.0 and SRA 2.0 and would like to upgrade SRM 5.5 and RP 4.x

EMC Simple Support Matrix for RecoverPoint 3.5.x and 4.x are more helpful:

https://support.emc.com/docu46908_Simple-Support-Matrix-EMC-RecoverPoint-3.5.pdf?language=en_US

https://support.emc.com/docu47558_Simple-Support-Matrix-RecoverPoint-4.x.pdf?language=en_US

SRM 5.5 is compatible with SRA 2.1 AND SRA 2.2 and both of them are also compatible with RP 4.0.

There is no info if SRA 2.2 is compatible with RP 3.5.x !!!

It looks like I need to:

  1. Upgrade SRM from 5.0 to 5.5
  2. Upgrade SRA 2.0 to 2.1 to keep support for RP 3.5.1
  3. Upgrade RecoverPoint 3.5 to 4.0
  4. Upgrade SRA 2.1 to SRA 2.2

Is this a correct plan or I am missing something?

Thank you.

This bit I am not sure about...

Release Notes specify RP 3.4(.1 or later) as the supported version for SRA 2.0. Should we read it as "all RP in the 3.4 version family" or "anything later than 3.4"...

It would be nice for someone from EMC to confirm which statement is correct.

Thank you.

Thanks. I've read the release notes and just wanted to confirm the following. If we upgrade to RP version 4 then can use RPA 2.0 for SRM? The below statement seems to suggest the answer would be "yes". Can you confirm?

RecoverPoint SRA 2.0 supports VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Server 5.0 and later with RecoverPoint 3.4 SP1 and later.

Thanks again for your help.

Could you confirm what is the correct upgrade path from SRM 5.0.1/SRA 2.0/RP 3.5.1 to SRM 5.5/SRA 2.2/RP 4.0 please?

Thank you.

Hi Mark,

Upgrade RP first followed by SRM and the SRA. This is the best option to minimise any disruption to the configuration.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Could you confirm SRM 5.0.3 and SRA 2.0 will support RP 4.0 please?

Thank you.

Hi Mark,

I can't see it in the online VMware Compatibility Guide and the previous RP ESM versions only stated support with 5.0 U2 with SRA 2.0. So from a testing perspective is doesn't look like it has been qualified. That said, we have an internal support matrix which states that RP 4.0 with SRM 5.0 U/SRA 2.0 is compatible.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your reply, much appreciated.

Well, I will trust your internal support matrix then.

BTW, I asked my colleague to log a call with EMC to get an official confirmation RE the compatibility and their reply and your response came in on the same day. Thank you for your ongoing support.

To help our fellow EMC Community members, here is the extended RP/SRA/SRM support Matrix:

I hope this helps.

This has been a great help.  Can you confirm if the top row of the table above would also apply to SRM 5.5.1?  VMWare does not support direct upgrade from SRM 5.0.3 to 5.5, you need to go all the way to 5.5.1.

We are running:

ESXi 5.0.0, SRM 5.0.3 , vCenter 5.0.0, SRA 2.0, RecoverPoint 4.0.2.1

We are upgrading to:

ESXi (same for a few weeks then 5.5 P1), SRM 5.5.1, vCenter 5.0.0c, SRA 2.2, RecoverPoint 4.0.2.1 (same)

The VMware compatibility guide shows that SRM 5.5 U1 is supported with the EMC RP SRA 2.2. The internal EMC matrix table shown in green above will be updated once internal qualification is completed. We also issue an RP Simple Support Matrix on support.emc.com but this only shows qualification for SRM on a general release basis, i.e. 5.5, as opposed to 5.5 U1.
