There is a chance of recovering the data files and folders.
You could try installing the 'failed' hard drive as the secondary, in the XPS 400, after installing the replacement and reloading windows, drivers and applications and see if you can transfer the files and folders to the new drive, or install the hard drive in a powered USB enclosure and attach it to working computer and see if the files and folders can be transfered.
I know this is an old post. Ive now had the exact same problem on a same spec machine(XPS 420) . It is a 500Gb SATA drive. Dell said I'll need a new hard drive which ive come to accept.
My issue is I havent backed up any data at all. Ive tried removing the hard drive to a friends computer and plugged it in as a second drive and was going to copy all the files I need to an external drive.
When I booted it up it detected the hard drive and showed it split in two (an OS and a Reocvery). I could access the recovery and check all the files. I could not access the OS drive for some reason - it says "DRIVE IS INACCESSABLE".
Any suggestions? I desperately want to save my all my files.
Is it worth buying a new hard drive and trying my own drive in my PC as second drive? Would that make any difference?
It is possible the hard drive is toast and the files and folders cannot be recovered, without the services of a Data Recovery Company.
After replacing the SATA hard dirve in the XPS 420, and have reinstalled windows, you could temporarily install the 'failed' hard drive as the secondary and see if you can transfer the files and folders to the new C:/ partition.
A SATA date cable would be needed, there should be a spare SATA power connector inside the case.
Note: Only data files and folders can be transfered, all applactions and programmes must be reinstalled from their discs, or downloaded from the publisher's website.
